Women's Lacrosse Lose Heartbreaker in Overtime

MT. VERNON, Iowa - Despite a four goal effort from Breann Tjaarda, The University of Dubuque women's lacrosse team fell in overtime to Cornell College, 11-10.

The Spartans offense started out hot, getting goals from Kori King, Breann Tjaarda and Cassandra Berger before the game was six minutes old. The Spartans cooled off as the Rams scored the next three goals over the next 14 minutes. However, UD regained their rhythm again and scored three of the final four goals of the first half to take a 6-4 lead into halftime.

Cornell opened the second half, scoring three of the first four goals in the opening six and a half minutes of the half. After altnernating goals, Cornell scored two in a row to grab a 9-8 lead with with 14:36 remaining. Cassandra Berger even the score up after putting home a free position shot for the Spartans with 12:13. Five minutes later, Cornell received a free position shot of their own and took advantage of it to regain the lead once again.

With time dwindling down, the Spartans received yet another free position shot and Breann Tjaarda took advantage of it to score her fourth goal of the game and send the game into overtime. However, in overtime, Cornell converted found the back of net on the first shot of overtime by either team to stun the Spartans.

The Spartans outshot the Rams 29-24 and committed two less turnovers. Kaley Weir played the entire game in the net for the Spartans, recording 10 saves and five groundballs.

Tjaarda led UD with four goals in the game to give her eight on the year. She also had UD's only two assists of the game. Kori King, Claire Carlson and Cassanda Berger each scored two goals to round out the scoring for UD. 

The Spartans host their first home game of the season on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. against Concordia (WI).
