Baseball Tames Prairie Fire in Sweep

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque baseball team bounced back after dropping a series over the weekend by sweeping the Knox College Prairie Fire in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon by scores of 8-0 and 4-2.

How It Happened

-Jack Lasswell and Kellen Mitchell teams up twice within the first three innings to give UD the early 2-0. In the first Mitchell plated Lasswell on a fielder’s choice and in the third it came by way of small ball with a safety squeeze.
-Luke Carroll delivered an RBI double in the bottom of the fourth to extend the UD lead to 3-0 through four.
-In the fifth, despite having just one hit, the Spartans plated three runs, taking advantage of two Knox errors and being aggressive on the base paths.
-First Knox hit off Schneiderman did not come until there was one out in the sixth inning.
-Jack Lasswell stayed hot and drove in Luke Carroll with an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth, before scoring his third run of the game on a Kellen Mitchell line out to left field to put the game out of reach.

How it Happened
-Knox took their first lead of the doubleheader in the top of the first of game two, scoring two runs after a sloppy start from UD defensively, which committed two errors in the frame.
-The Spartan bats got going in the bottom of the third, which started by Daulton Kvenvold reaching on an error by the shortstop. Kvenvold scored after stealing second and a single to center by Jacob Sonnefeldt. Two more runs came around on a two out double off the bat of Kellen Mitchell to give UD the 3-2 lead.
-UD was able to finally tack on an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth when Jordan Goldstein singled to plate pinch runner Max Snowden.
-After giving up two unearned runs in the first inning, Carlson retired 22 Knox batters in a row to end his afternoon on the mound after eight innings before handing the ball to Nick Sewruk to close out the game in the ninth.
