Cangelosi Lifts Spartans Over Prairie Wolves in Overtime

LINCOLN, Neb. – The University of Dubuque women’s soccer team made the long trip to Lincoln, Nebraska and pulled out a 1-0 win in overtime over the Nebraska Wesleyan Prairie Wolves.

How It Happened
-The Spartans (12-2-1, 4-1-1 A-R-C) forced their way to a corner kick just 1:15 into the contest, but Amanda Chlebek’s header off the corner went wide.
-Before the game was 25 minutes old, the Spartans had gotten off five shots, one on goal, while NWU did not attempt their first shot until the 36th minute.
-UD dominated play in the first half, getting off seven shots to Nebraska Wesleyan’s two, but none of them went for goals.
-In the 68th minute, the Prairie Wolves (7-8, 1-6 A-R-C) committed a foul right outside the 18 yard box on the right side of the field, giving UD a free kick. However, Lauren Cangelosi’s free kick hooked wide left of the net.
-88th minute, NWU had ball at top of the 18 and threatening but the Spartan defense cleared it.
-Carissa Brown had a shot blocked with one minute remaining, leading to a corner but the Spartans could get nothing else out of it and the game was sent into overtime.
-Four and a half minutes into overtime, Cangelosi received the ball about 30 yards out, did a little crossover and fired a shot over the goalkeeper’s head and into the top, left corner of the net to give the Spartans the 1-0 win.
