DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque men’s basketball team lead for all but two minutes on Wednesday night in route to a 82-66 victory over Edgewood College.

Edgewood made back-to-back threes in the opening 90 seconds to go ahead 6-2 but the lead did not last long with Marcus McDaniel hit a three at the 16:38 mark in the first half to give UD the lead and the Spartans never trailed again. UD’s lead grew to as many as 13 in the first half but a 8-3 run from Edgewood to close out the first half shrank the UD lead to 43-35 heading into halftime.

The Spartans busted out of the gates in the second half, expanding their lead to 20 with 14:02 left in the game after five straight points from Mitch Burger. UD was able to fend off any small run that Edgewood tried putting together, never letting their lead shrink to less than 11 for the rest of the game.

Marcus McDaniel helped carry the Spartan offense early, scoring 12 of his game-high 16 points in the first half. Michael Williams took the dominant scoring roll from McDaniel in the second half, scoring 12 of his 15 points in the second half of play. Mitch Berger and Peter Ragen joined McDaniel and Williams in double figures with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Every Spartan was active on the glass against the Eagles with seven different players grabbing at least three rebounds with Deonte Newsome leading the way with five.

After struggling from the free throw line in the opening two game, the Spartans thrived at the charity stripe tonight, making 17-20, including Michael Williams going a perfect seven for seven. The Spartans limited the Eagles to 45.1% shooting from the field, while UD shot a blistering 61.2%. UD took full advantage of the Eagles turnovers, scoring 21 points off of 13 turnovers.

The Spartans will travel down the road this weekend to play at the Loras Classic. UD will face Olivet College on Friday night at 6:00 p.m. and the College of St. Scholastica on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
