Men's Hoops Lose at BVU, Still Control Own Destiny
Feb 9, 2019
STORM LAKE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque men’s basketball team traveled to Storm Lake on Saturday, where they were tripped up by Buena Vista, 83-61.
It was a slow start for both teams as it took nearly three minutes for the first basket to be made when Marcus McDaniel drilled a three. The two teams traded threes on the next couple possessions and Buena Vista’s first four baskets would come from beyond the arc to get the early 12-11 lead over UD. The two teams stayed within at least six points of each other until the Beavers slowly began to pull away late in the first half after an 8-0 run and closed the half on a 16-5 run to send the Spartans into the locker room down 14.
UD fell behind by as many as 20 with 14:18 remaining in the game. The Spartans were able to get the deficit down to 11 points after an 8-0 run over a 2:30 span to trail by 11 with 8:26 left in the game. However, UD ran out of gas and could not get closer than 10 points for the remainder of the game.
Michael Williams was very efficient in the loss, scoring 22 points on 10 of 12 shooting from the field. Williams had yet another double-double as he added a game-high 16 rebounds to go with his 22 points. After scoring eight first half points, Dylan Hundley wound up finishing with 11 points on 4-7 shooting. Marcus McDaniel also match Hundley with 11 points.
The Spartans struggled shooting from three on Saturday afternoon, finishing the game 8-35 from beyond the arc, while the Beavers hit 18 threes on 33 attempts. For the game, UD would shoot 37.9% (22-58), but the Beavers managed to hit 44.8% (26-58) of their shots.
Despite the loss, UD still controls their own destiny for a spot in the American Rivers Conference Tournament. The Spartans can punch their ticket with a win over Wartburg next Saturday.
The Spartans host Wartburg next Saturday in the regular season finale and senior day. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
