Men's Soccer Comes Up Short Against Wartburg

DUBUQUE, Iowa – A late goal pulled the University of Dubuque men's soccer team (2-8, 0-3 A-R-C) within one but they could not complete the comeback against the Wartburg Knights and fell 2-1.

How It Happened
-The Spartans first shot of the contest game in the fifth minute off the foot of Jake Persenico but was saved.    
-Wartburg’s first goal came on a shot from outside the 18 that snuck under a couple legs and was eventually tapped in by Wartburgs Ayo Adebayo in the 20th minute.
-The Knights (6-5, 2-1 A-R-C) continued to attack the Spartans in the following minutes, in the 22nd minute they sent a shot off the crossbar and in the 24th had a shot blocked but the score remained 1-0 until halftime.
-The Spartans fell behind 2-0 in the 58th minute when Wartburg sent a corner into the box. After the ball bounced off a few players, Riley Close kicked it into the back of the net.
-UD looked to answer just 30 seconds after the Knights second goal but Jake Persenico’s header from close range was blocked and cleared out.
-The Spartans had back to back corner kicks in the 75th minute but were unable to convert on either one.
-Yet another corner came for UD, this one with just 7:45 remaining. It looked like the Spartans may have a chance to score as the ball was bouncing around in the box but eventually got deflected into the goalkeeper’s hands.
-The Spartans finally got on the scoreboard with just 2:43 remaining when a chip into the box went off the head of Gloire Luwara, right to Alessandro Corazzina to finished off the goal for his first career goal.
-One last push in the final 30 seconds came up just short for the Spartans.
