Spartans Football Open Conference Play with Road Victory

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The University of Dubuque football team opened the American Rivers Conference play with a 27-18 road victory over the Coe College Kohawks to improve to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in A-R-C play. The warm Saturday afternoon provided the Spartans with 389 yards of offense while the Spartans stingy defense held the Kohawks to 76 yards rushing on the day.

Dwayne Allen Jr. led all rushers with 24 carries for 106 yards and one touchdown on a two yard scamper with time running down in the second quarter. Sean Duffy spread the ball to six receivers and would finish with 15-22 and 214 yards through the air. His favorite targets were Kody Reimer who caught four for 88 yards and a touchdown and teammate Emmanuel Jenkins who grabbed four for 45 yards. Reimer caught the only touchdown for UD in the second half on a 48 yard pass with 5:04 left in the third quarter.

Punter Andy Vujnovich was able to flip the field in the Spartans favor all day long by punting three times for 47.7 yards average and placing all three inside the Coe 20 yard line with his longest being for 55 yards and starting the Coe Drive at the one yard line.

UD did have some miscues as they would fumble three times (lost two) and were called for six penalties in the win. The Spartans converted on four of nine third down conversions and scored on 2-3 red zone chances.

The Spartans defense played well three sacks and eight tackles for losses. Jacob Owens led with eight tackles, Blaze Barista added seven tackles, Freddy Walton had six tackles, and Logan Benter five. Chad Marsh and Marshon Crowder led with two tackles for losses each for a combined 19 yard losses.

UD returns home for next week's Hall of Fame game on Sept. 22 at 1 p.m. vs. the Central College Dutch (3-0 overall, 1-0 in A-R-C).
