How It Happened
-In the 14th minute of action, Lexus Rose got the ball about 25 yards out from the goal, took a couple dribbles and a crossover before firing it with her left foot over the leaping Central goalie and into the top, left corner for the net for the first goal of the game.
-Central’s best scoring chance of the first half came in the 24th minute when the Dutch lofted a corner into the box and got off a clean header from point blank range but Victoria Roethler came up with the save.
-The second half was very much of a defensive battle as both teams struggled to get good scoring chances.
-In the 63rd minute the Spartans got fouled just outside the box leading to a free kick but Lexus Rose’s attempt ricocheted off of a Dutch player.
-The Spartans got another good look in the 77th minute when Lauren Cangelosi was racing down the right side of the field with the ball and sent a cross into the box where there was a streaking McKenna Young but the ball skipped right past Young.
-In the 80th minute, Cangelosi lofted a perfect corner into the box but the header from a Spartan went just left of the crossbar.
-The Dutch got an attack going late. In the 85th minute, it looked as if the Dutch had a breakaway but the Spartan defense slowed them up and Roethler came diving out to steal the ball away from the Dutch.
-With just 90 seconds remaining, a Dutch player broke free on the left side of the box for a wide open shot but Roethler got her glove up just in time to deflect the shot over the net and the Spartans were then able to run out the clock for a 1-0 win.
