DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque volleyball team cruised to an easy 3-0 (25-13,25-18,25-18) win over UW-Platteville on Spike Out Cancer Night at the Stoltz Sports Center.

The Spartans raced out to a 6-0 lead in the opening set and never looked back. UW-Platteville scored two of the first three points of the second set to lead 1-0 and 2-1, their only two leads of the entire night. The Spartans slowly pulled away in the second set, gradually building a lead as big as seven, which would hold until they closed off the set at 25-18.

UD went up by as many eight points at 17-9; however the Pioneers would not go quietly.  UW-Platteville quickly shrank the UD lead to 18-16 but that would be as close as they could get as UD took the set 25-18 to complete the sweep.

The Spartans were able to go deep into their bench with the big lead, allowing 14 players to see action and eight of them recording kills. The even offensive attack made it so no Spartan reached double figure in kills as Kara Wright led the way with nine and Paige Harbort next with six. Kate Messino dished out 24 of UD’s 27 assists, while Jenna Runde hauled in 18 digs and combined with Grace Strawser for seven of UD’s eight service aces. For the match, the UD defense held the Pioneers to a negative hitting percentage at -.037.

Up next, the Spartans have a double dip this weekend when travel to Simpson on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. and Central on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
