Spartans Walk It Off In The Rain
Apr 30, 2019
DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque baseball team battled the rainy conditions to rally in the seventh and walked it off in extras for the 6-5 win over UW-Platteville. Game two of the schedule doubleheader was cancelled due to the rain.
How it Happened
-With two outs and a runner on third in the top of the first, the Spartans threw a wild pitch on a ball four and the runner from third attempted to score but Jordan Nelson covered home just in time to get the out at home and out of the inning with no damage.
-UD was not able to avoid damage in the second, as Platteville scored two runs with a two-out hit to center.
-In the bottom of the second, the Spartans put the first two runners in scoring position but the Pioneers struck out the side to get out of the jam.
-UD loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the third when Kellen Mitchell walked with the bases loaded to get UD on the board. Thomas Kempf followed suit and lined a single to centerfield to score two UD runs, putting the Spartans ahead 3-2.
-The following inning, UD added an insurance run with a Zach McCoy single.
-UW-Platteville loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the sixth after a single, hit batter and bunt single. A UD error gave the Pioneers a run and the bases remained loaded to force the Spartans to bring in their closer Nathan Schneiderman. UWP would grab the lead once again after a wild pitch and a walk with the bases loaded to make it 5-4 heading into the bottom of the sixth.
-UD threatened in the bottom half of the sixth, loading the bases with two outs, but the Pioneers were able to get a strikeout to keep the Spartans from tying or taking the lead.
-A leadoff walk by Zach McCoy began the bottom of the seventh for the Spartans. A wild pitch allowed McCoy to move to second with two outs, when Luke Carroll drove home the tying run with a flair to center and advanced to second on the throw. However, the Spartans could not bring home another run, sending the game to extra innings.
-Schneiderman sent the Pioneers down in order in the top of the eighth, setting up a walk-off opportunity for the Spartans
-Kellen Mitchell singled up the middle to lead off the inning and advanced to second on yet another UW-Platteville wild pitch. After back-to-back walks from Kempf and McCoy to load the bases, the Pioneers walked Justin Jensen to bring home the winning run for the walk-off win.
-Game two of the doubleheader was cancelled
