Spartans With Convincing Win Over Ripon

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque women’s soccer team dominated the Ripon Red Hawks on a cold Thursday night, coming out with a 3-1 win.

How It Happened
-In just the fifth minute, Alexa Martin sent a beautiful through ball to an open Lexus Rose, her found herself alone with the goalie, but could not get enough on the shot and it was saved.
-Elana Krasowski had a great look in the 11th minute but was saved by a diving goalie
-Martin kept trying the long pass and finally led to a goal in the 15th minute when Martin’s pass found the head of McKenna Young, who headed it to Natalie Dienstbach, who headed it over the goalie and into the net before colliding with the goalkeeper.
-The Spartan defense was very stout in the first half; Ripon did not get their first shot of the game until the 26th minute.
-In the 33rd minute Martin connected with Rose on yet another long pass, Rose’s shot was kicked saved by the Ripon goalkeeper but went right to Lauren Cangelosi who had the easy put back goal to put UD up 2-0, which held until halftime.
-Olivia Sullivan almost pushed the UD lead to 3-0 in the 53rd minute but the shot ricocheted off the post.
-Ripon’s first shot on goal did not come until the 59th minute and lead to their first goal as the first shot was saved by a diving Victoria Roethler but went right to another Red Hawk for the easy tap in goal to cut the UD lead to 2-1.
-Cangelosi gave the Spartans breathing room with her second goal of the night and sixth of the season in the 71st minute. Rose sent a pass from the edge of the box on the goaline to Cangelosi into the box who shot it off the Ripon goalkeeper’s hands but it tricked in for the insurance goal.
-The Spartans had two more great scoring chances to build the lead to three. The Red Hawks whiffed on a clear in the 80th minute, giving the ball to an open Amanda Chlebek but the shot sailed just high.
-In the 89th minute, Alexa Martin fired off a free kick which was saved by a diving goalkeeper but bounced out to a Spartan for a wide open net and easy tap in. However, the goal was called off due to offsides

-UD outshot Ripon, 25-5, including 16-1 in the first half.
