Spartans and Knights Play to 1-1 Draw

DUBUQUE, Iowa – In a pivotal game in the American Rivers Conference, the University of Dubuque women’s soccer team battled windy conditions and played the Wartburg Knights to a 1-1 tie.

How It Happened
-With wind gusts in the 30 mph range, the Spartans had the wind at their back in the first half and applied the pressure early.
-scramble in front of net off of a corner kick from Alex Martin, Olivia Sullivan’s shot was saved and punched out to Carissa Brown who’s shot from about eight yards was blocked.
-After dominating time of control in the first half, the Spartans finally broke through when Natalie Dienstbach launched a shot from about 35 yards out and into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute.
-UD outshot the Knights 11-1 in the first half, with eight of the 11 shots going on net.
-Wartburg took advantage of the wind early in the second half, sending a free kick into the box that bounced off a few players, leading to an open net and an easy goal for the Knights to tie the score at 1-1.
-In the 80th minute, Lexus Rose stole the ball from a Knight, dribbled to the 18 and did a little cross before sending a shot just above the crossbar to keep the score knotted at one all.
-The Knights had a few scares of their own in the final ten minutes, a cross into the box in the 83rd minute, found the head of Alyssa Drewelow, who headed it inches above the crossbar. Drewelow once again got lose and sent a shot from the left side but Victoria Roethler came up with a diving save to send the game into overtime.
-In the first two minutes of extra time, a loose ball off of a Wartburg corner kick resulted in a point blank shot for the Knights but Roethler came up with yet another huge save for UD.
-An accidental hand ball by Alexis Turner gave the Knights a shorter version of a corner kick with two minutes left but the Spartans were able to get a clear to avoid any damage.
-Wartburg had one last corner but it did not amount to a threat and the Spartans were able to clear and run out the clock to seal the draw.
