Track and Field Wins 2018 Dubuque Championships

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque track and field team kicked off the 2018-19 indoor season by taking home the title for the 2018 Dubuque Championships. The men and women combined for 140 points.

The women pentathlon and men’s heptathlon kicked off the Dubuque Championships on Friday afternoon. In the women’s pentathlon, Freshman Vanessa Einola won the shot put (9.95m/32-07.75) and long jump (5.38m/18-08.00) to help her to 2974 points for the pentatlong and a second place finish in her first collegiate meet. Tyler Fowler was the top UD finisher in the men’s heptathlon, finishing seventh with 3558 points.

The Spartan men had a dominant performance on Saturday, coming up with 17 top two finishes in 13 events. Blaze Murfin picked up right where he left off in the spring, winning the shot put and weight throw. In his first collegiate meet, Dylan Kutsch won the 55m dash and placed second in the 200m. Jeremiah Steed also picked up two top two finishes, jumping 13.40m in the long jump to finish second and outracing Kutsch in the 200m dash in 23.12 place first. 

The UD women came in second place in the team standings on the women side after totatling 52 points. Loras put up 69 points, the most of the three women's teams and Clarke rounded out the trio of teams with 18. On the men's side the Spartans cruised to the top total, finishing with 88 points. Loras came in second with 39 and Clarke ended with 11. 

The Dubuque Championship trophy went to UD after totaling the scores between each school's men's and women's team. The Spartans tallied 140 for the title, Loras had 108 and Clarke was in the back with 29.
