ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The University of Dubuque volleyball team fell on the road on Thursday night to Augustana College, 3-0 (25-18,25-22,25-18).

The Spartans (3-2 overall) rallied off four straight points in the first set against the Vikings to grab a 9-6 lead behind the serve of Johanna Steggall. The Vikings then found their grove, scoring seven of the next eight points to go ahead 14-10 before winning the set 25-18. The Spartans trailed most of set two and with the score at 16-12 in favor of Augustana, the Spartans rallied for five of the next six points to even the set at 17. However, after trading the next few points and the Spartans trailing 21-20, the Vikings would score four of the next five points to take a commanding two sets to none lead.

The Spartans and Vikings traded the first six points of the third set but the Spartans could never get an extended rally going and Augustana slowly pulled away to take the third set 25-18 and close out the match in straight sets.

UD’s hitting percentage went down as the night went on, starting at .174 in the first set, then .158 and just .065 in the third and final set. Kara Wright led UD in kills, attack attempts and digs on Wednesday with 12, 34 and 17, respectively. The Spartans assisted on 32 of their 33 kills against the Vikings with 25 of those coming from Kate Messino.

UD returns to the court this weekend when they head across Dubuque to play in the Loras College Invite with two games on Friday and two more on Saturday.
