Volleyball Finishes Rhodes College Invite 3-1

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – After going 2-0 on Friday, the University of Dubuque volleyball team closed out the opening weekend of the season splitting matches on Saturday afternoon. UD beat Brevard in straight sets (25-12, 25-11, 25-12) and falling to Birmingham-Southern (18-25, 25-20, 18-25, 17-25).

The Spartans picked up right where they left off on Friday afternoon, cruising to a straight set victory over Brevard on Saturday afternoon. UD never let Brevard get comfortable in the match, taking early leads in each set to take the drama out of the match. Nine different Spartans recorded at least two kills on Saturday, led by Kendall Kauffman with 11. UD had a staggering 14 service aces against Brevard, six coming from Johanna Steggall, four from Kenrda Witte and Jenna Runde and Grace Strawser each had one. As a team, UD had a hitting percentage of .356 and assisted on 39 of 42 kills.

UD dropped their first match of the season in their fourth and final contest at the Rhodes College Invitational to Birmingham-Southern. The Spartans managed to only hit .163 for the match with 49 and had 21 attack errors. Meanwhile, Brimingham-Southern hit .258 with 68 kills. Kara Wright and Kate Messino tried to get the attack going but it was not enough. Wright led UD with 17 kills, while Messino had 42 assists on UD’s 49 kills.

The Spartans are back in action on Wednesday, September 5th, when they travel to Augustana College.
