Bob Fello Associate Head Football Coach Email: rfello Office Phone: (563) 589-3631 Biography - Click to close
Fello replaced Gary Griffin who left the Spartans staff to become the athletic director at Rockford Lutheran High School in Rockford, Ill.
"It's indeed a rare opportunity to bring aboard Bob Fello to the UD football program," commented head coach Stan Zweifel. "Coach Fello brings with him a wealth of experience in coaching, recruiting, and mentoring student-athletes as well as coaches." Fello has over 35 years of football experience as a coach, scout, teacher and administrator, and comes to UD after spending the last season with Marshal University and prior to that four seasons at The Citadel (three seasons as assistant head coach). Prior to The Citadel, Fello spent a year at the Big XII Conference office where he assisted with game day operations and coordinated the evaluation of conference officiating. "When my wife and I were looking at openings, we were looking for a good place with good people," commented Fello. "Having known Stan and assistant coach Mick Miyamoto for over 20 years and interacting with each other at various coaching clinics, we would sit around and talk about some day all of us coaching together. I'm excited to be here at UD, this is truly a family atmosphere and it gives me the opportunity to work with coaches who are in it for the right reasons. Student-athletes are here to get a quality education and play football for the love of the game. I loved the campus when I first visited, and after meeting with President Dr. Jeffrey Bullock and Joseph Chlapaty (Chairman of the Board, Cl '68), their vision and love for the University of Dubuque is infectious." During his tenure at The Citadel, Fello oversaw special teams. The Bulldogs produced the #1 punt returner in the FCS in 2008, All-American Andre Roberts. The Citadel finished the season as the top ranked punt return team in the nation (FCS) and the 13th-ranked squad for net punting. Fello has coached in five bowl games including two pre-season Kick-Off Classics; one in Giants Stadium and one at Arrowhead Stadium, and the first outdoor Big XII Championship Game also at Arrowhead. He has coached prominent players such as Dana Stubblefield who won a Super Bowl with the San Francisco 49ers, Gilbert Brown who won a the Super Bowl with the Green Bay Packers, Don Davis who won a Super Bowl with the St. Louis Rams and Darren Howard, a No. 1 draft pick for the New Orleans Saints. Before joining the Big XII staff, Fello spent two seasons, 2002-04, as the assistant head coach at SMU. While coaching at SMU, he coached the defensive line and coordinated the Mustangs' punt return and punt block schemes. His punt return unit set several single game and season records and was ranked third in the NCAA. From 1999 to 2001, Fello was the defensive line coach at Kansas State University under head coach Bill Snyder. He also assisted with special teams while coaching the Wildcats to the 2001 Southwestern Bell Cotton Bowl Classicplayed on January 1, 2001, the 2001 Insight.com Bowl played on Dec. 29, 2001 and 1999 Holiday Bowl played in San Diego on Dec. 29, 1999. During his tenure at K-State, Fello helped the Wildcats achieve a total defense national ranking of fourth in 2001. Both starting defensive ends, Monty Beisel and Chris Johnson, recorded at least 10 sacks and earned All-Big XII honors that season. He also helped Kansas State to a second-place mark in the nation in total defense in 1999. While coaching the 2000 K-State punt return team, which consisted of two-time All-American David Allen (1998, 1999) and All-American Aaron Lockett, Fello led them to a No. 1 ranking in punt return average. Fello also coached Darren Howard, KSU's career sack leader and Big XII sack leader. Preceding his years at KSU, Fello was the defensive and recruiting coordinator at James Madison University for one season. Coaching under head coach Alex Wood, Fello also concentrated his efforts in the Dukes' secondary. There he coached All-American Tony Booth who went on to play for the Carolina Panthers. Fello also spent time at Texas Christian University assisting Horned Frogs Head Coach Pat Sullivan. From 1995-97, he was the special teams coordinator and the defensive line coach at TCU. The Horned Frogs' 1995 squad was ranked in the top-20 in every special teams category. Fello coached Lou Groza Award winner Mike Reeder during that time. He began his coaching career at Kent State University as a graduate assistant coach, but progressed up the chain of command from linebackers' coach to defensive coordinator to recruiting coordinator from 1976-87. Following his stint at Kent State, Fello was with head coach Glen Mason at the University of Kansas from 1988-94. For the first four years on the Jayhawks' staff, Fello coached the outside linebackers and was their clinic coordinator. But from 1991-94, Fello served as the team's defensive leader as well as the tackles and linebackers coach. While at Kansas, Fello's defense led the Jayhawks to a 1992 Aloha Bowl victory over BYU. Before entering into the coaching profession, Fello was a three-year starter at Kent State, one season with legendary coach Don James, where he earned a bachelor's degree in health, physical education and recreation in 1974. "This is one of the best football coaches I have ever known in my 40 years of coaching, but what is more important to me and my staff is that he is a great person." added Zweifel. "I'm anxious to get started and try to build on what the Spartan staff did last year,"said Fello. "I look forward to learning the other schools in our league and getting a handle on what this league is all about. Coaching with Stan and his staff who toil hard and are diligent recruiters who devote the same amount of energy to every player, working with them to better their skills and above all making them better people." Fello was born in Baton Rouge, La. He, and his wife Rona reside in Dubuque. |
