Dan Runkle Biography - Click Here
Dan Runkle joined the University of Dubuque as Director of Athletics in August of 2002. Runk came to the University of Dubuque after 21 years (1981-2001) as Head Football Coach and Assistant Professor at Division II Minnesota State University, Mankato. Runkle is a member of the Athletic Hall of Fame at Illinois College, Minnesota State University, Mankato and the North Central Conference (NCC).
While at MSU-Mankato Runkle won two North Central Conference championships (1987,1993), made three NCAA Division II playoff appearances (1987,1991,1993), and was named North Central Conference Coach of the Year (1987). His 108 career wins are the most by any MSU-Mankato Football coach and the 14 highest total in Division II history. In addition, Runkle was named Football Gazette Division II National Coach of the Year in 1991. During his tenure 44 players were named First Team All-NCC with 30 All-Americans and two Harlon Hill finalists. In the classroom, Runkle worked heavily with his student athletes to help them achieve a team GPA of 3.0 and a graduation rate of 93%. A 1968 graduate of Illinois College in Jacksonville, Ill. Runkle would earn a combined 10 athletic letters in baseball, basketball, and football on route to being named to the Hall of Fame in 1993. Following graduation, Runkle would earn his Masters in Education with an emphasis in Sports Administration from Western Illinois University while serving as a graduate assistant football coach. Runkle has also made stops at several Division I institutions including: University of Utah, University of South Dakota, Northern Arizona University, and University of Minnesota. Jason Berna Biography - Click Here
Jason Berna joined the University of Dubuque in 2001. He started the men's and women's soccer programs in 2001 and was both the Men's and Women's Head Soccer coach for eight season before stepping down as the Men's Coach in 2008 to focus all his energy on the women's program. He led the women's team to four straight conference tournament appearances and 6 out of 8 for the programs history. He led the men's team to two straight playoff appearances with his last year ending in the IIAC Championship semi-finals. He was named 2005 and 2009 IIAC Women's Coach of the year.
He has coached on the Women side: 25 All-Iowa Conference athletes, 2 All-Region performers, 1 Conference MVP and several Academic All-Conference student-athletes. He has always pushed his teams to not only do well on the field but in the class room. The women's program has received two team academic awards from the NSCAA in 2006 & 2008 for having above a 3.0 team GPA. Berna graduated from Loras College where he played four years, was a three-time All-Iowa Conference selection, and three-year captain. He also trained and played in 1999 with the Des Menace PDL team for one summer before tearing his ACL for the second time. He was an assistant coach with his alma mater for one season with the men's and women's soccer programs before joining UD. Berna also serves as the Dubuque Soccer Club administrator and as an Iowa Olympic Development State Staff coach for the past five years. Berna holds the highest coaching license offered by the United States Soccer Fedration, an "A" License as well as his NSCAA Goal Keeping License. He is also a state license instructor teaching the USSF "D" course on campus so students can obtain their beginning coaching license while attending UD. Berna received a master's degree in Physical Education and Athletic Administration and an undergraduate degree in sports science from Loras College in 2001 and 1999. Jon Davison Biography - Click Here
Jon Davison (C'61), who announced last November that he was retiring as Clarke's head basketball and men's golf coach will be returning home to the University of Dubuque.
Davison will be entering his 40th season in the collegiate ranks when he takes over the men's golf program for the Spartans. He will counsel men's basketball and spend time re-connecting with Dubuque Alumni as special projects coordinator for the development office. Davison, a native of Aledo, Ill., has spent 42 years in the coaching and teaching profession. He started his collegiate coaching career at his alma mater in 1966. Davison logged over 300 wins in 27 seasons as head basketball coach at UD. His squads posted an overall won-loss record of 371-320 and had four 20-plus win seasons. During the 1980's, Davison's squads dominated the Iowa Conference, compiling the best won-loss record over that 10-year period. His 1986, 1988, and 1990 squads won the Iowa Conference championship. The Spartans qualified for the NCAA Division III tournament in 1981, 1986, 1988, and 1990. Davison was named Iowa Conference Coach of the Year in basketball in 1986, 1988 and 1990, and in golf in 1975. In 1990, he was awarded the Paul Maaske Award as Iowa's Small College Coach of the Year. He coached eight Conference Players of the Year at UD. Davison served as director of athletics, head men's basketball coach (27 years), head golf coach (15 years), head track coach (6 years), head tennis coach (3 years), head cross country coach (10 years), head baseball coach (1 year), assistant football coach (8 years), associate professor of physical education and department chairman (20 years) at UD at various times from 1966 to 1993. Davison lettered in four sports at the UD, where he garnered four letters in both football and track, two in basketball, and one in baseball. After a three-year hiatus from collegiate coaching, Davison joined Clarke's coaching staff in 1996. He guided his 2005-06 squad to a 17-10 mark and its first Northern Illinois - Iowa Conference championship. Clarke finished 11-1 overall in league play. The Crusaders' championship season came on the heels of a 20-7 campaign in 2004-05. Davison guided Clarke's men's golf program to seven straight Northern Illinois - Iowa Conference championships from 1999 to 2005. Davison was named the conference Coach of the Year in 1998-99, 1999-2000, 2001-02, 2002-03 and 2003-04. He was named the 2004-05 NIIC Co-Coach of the Year. April Elsbernd Biography - Click Here
April Elsbernd is a native of Calmar, Iowa (South Winneshiek High School), and played collegiate volleyball at Coe College from 1999-2002. She was a four-year letterwinner and earned Academic All-Iowa Conference honors in 2001 and 2002. She holds Coe's records for most kills in a match (4 games), career record attempts with 3,506, and solo blocks in a four game match with 7. After graduating from Coe, she spent three seasons as an assistant under Cornell College's Jeff Meeker and one season as an assistant at Western Technical College in La Crosse, Wis.
Most recently she was the head coach at Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge, Iowa. In her first season, she finished with a 15-22 record. "I was really impressed with the University of Dubuque campus, the mission and vision of the college and the city of Dubuque itself," added Elsbernd. "I am familiar with the Iowa Conference, as a former student-athlete and am glad to be part of the IIAC as a head coach. I'm looking forward to the challenges of the strong competition among the IIAC and learning from my colleagues." One of Elsbernd's goals is to go out and be competitive every time they step on the court. She is anxious to begin working with the Spartans and to bring in recruits who will play at the level needed to be successful in the IIAC and in regional play. "The University of Dubuque believes we have hired someone with a love of the sport of volleyball, who has a great enthusiasm for recruiting," added Dan Runkle. "We have taken steps to help us move back among the top of the Iowa Conference and become a successful volleyball program once again." Elsbernd graduated from Coe in 2003 with a degree in sociology and communications. She received her master's degree in Sports Administration from the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse in 2007. Lindsay Feig Biography - Click Here
Lindsay Feig most recently was head coach at Santa Barbara City College in California and an assistant coach at University of California- Santa Barbara. She was a four-year starter as goalkeeper at the University of Redlands from 2004-2008. She was a First Team All-West Region Honoree and ranked 15th nationally as a goalkeeper in 2008. She held three school records during her tenure: Saves in a Game (21); Saves in a Year (161); and Saves per Game (10.73).
"We are excited about adding Women's Lacrosse to our athletic program and to have Lindsay Feig as our coach," stated Athletic Director Dan Runkle. "Lindsay brings both playing and coaching experience to our program, and we are excited to have her start recruiting student-athletes." Feig, a native of Hingham, Mass., plans on having UD compete next year as a club sport in around 10 games with a full slate of 17 contests the following inaugural season in 2013. Chad Gunnelson Biography - Click Here
Chad Gunnelson joined the University of Dubuque after 6 years as the Head Track & Field Coach at Madison East High School for the boys and girls teams.
Gunnelson led the Spartans Men's Track and Field Team to a fourth place finish at the 2012 Iowa Conference Indoors Championships. It was the highest finish for UD since 2005. The men's team set two school records indoors and had one NCAA DIII Championships Qualifier. "We're thrilled to have Coach Gunnelson join the Spartans," commented Dan Runkel, director of athletics. "Chad has proven himself as an excellent coach. He has a strong commitment to developing excellence both on the field and in the classroom. His recruiting ability will be instrumental toward the success of the program." While at Madison East, Gunnelson coached 22 school record holders, breaking 15 school records with back-to-back state champions in 2010 and 2011.Gunnelson resurrected Track and Field at Madison East by increasing team size from 38 athletes in 2006 to 90 in 2011. He focused on the student first by improving athletes academic success through weekly study tables and classroom visits, helping the team reach an average cumulative GPA of 3.24 in 2011. He also worked hard to develop each athlete on the track, as well. In his last year at Madison East, Gunnelson coached four athletes to sectional championships, and all reached the podium at the Wisconsin State Track Meet this spring. Gunnelson gained his experience and expertise developing athletes as the Owner/CEO of Athletic Republic.He helped build Athletic Republic into the largest sports performance training facility in the Madison area where over 600 youth, high school, college, professional, and Olympic athletes work to improve their athletic ability each year. Chad has spoken at many coaching clinics on topics such as track and field techniques, strength and conditioning, injury prevention, nutrition, and more. He has served on the Athletic Republic Corporate Advisory Council since 2008. Gunnelson has a passion for developing athletes and extensive experience specializing in sprint mechanics, energy system development, injury pre-habilitation, power development, hurdles and jumps training, as well as Olympic lifting techniques. "I'm very excited for the opportunity to coach at the University of Dubuque, says Gunnelson. Brad Johnson Biography - Click Here
Brad Johnson joined the University of Dubuque Spartans in 2004 as the Men's and Women's Assistant Soccer Coach. After helping guide both programs to new heights, he was named the Associate Head Men's Soccer Coach in 2008. Following an extremely successful 2008 season, Johnson was promoted to the position of Head Men's Soccer Coach.
Johnson currently holds a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) -B- License, NSCAA Goalkeeping License, and NSCAA Special Topic License. He is actively involved in the Dubuque Soccer Club and is currently the U-13 to U-18 Director of Coaching. As well, Johnson was previously the Head Boy's Soccer Coach at Hempstead High School in Dubuque. He attended Loras College for four years, where he was a three-time captain, four-year All-Iowa Conference honoree, an All-Region selection, and garnered Iowa Conference MVP honors. He holds the records at Loras College for most points and goals scored in a career. Johnson received a master's degree in Business Administration from the University of Dubuque and his Bachelor Degree in Finance from Loras College.

Jon McGovern Biography - Click Here
Jon McGovern joined the Spartans as Head Wrestling Coach for the University of Dubuque in 2002. Prior to joining the staff at the University of Dubuque, McGovern was the head assistant coach at the University of Chicago. His knowledge of the sport was shared around the Chicago area where he volunteered his time running a freestyle wrestling club for high school youth.
McGovern spent 2000 year training full time at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. He placed 4th in the finals of the 2000 Olympic Trials in Dallas Texas. He was a 1998 US National Team Member and placed third at the 1998 US National Tournament and third at the 1998 World Team Trials. During the 1998-1999 season he was the assistant head wrestling coach at the University of Pennsylvania where he helped coach the team to a school record 11th place finish in the NCAA Division I National Championships with three NCAA All-Americans and one NCAA Division I National Champion. In 1997-1998, he was the head assistant coach at the University of Virginia and helped coach the squad which set a school record of seven NCAA Division I National Qualifiers and a second place finish in the Athletic Coast Conference Championships. McGovern graduated from Central College in 1992. As a Dutch, he earned the distinction of being a three-time NCAA Division III All-American, a three-time IIAC Champion, and a two-time NCAA Division III National Champion. He graduated with a Master's Degree in Education from the University of Iowa in 1996. The native of Riceville, Iowa, was a four-time state qualifier and a three-time place winner in high school. Bryan Mours Biography - Click Here
Bryan Mours was selected to lead the University of Dubuque's men's and women's tennis programs in January 2009.
Mours is a Wisconsin Rapids, Wis. native and attended Wisconsin Rapids Assumption High School. During his collegiate career, he played for two seasons at the University of Northern Iowa and is a 2000 UNI graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Secondary Education Social Science, with an emphasis in United States History, Geography, and Psychology. His tennis teaching career began in 1994 when he began his affiliation with Bull's Eye Country Club in Wisconsin Rapids, WI. Mours served as the Head Tennis Professional at the club until 1997. From 2003 to 2004 he was served as Head Tennis Instructor of the Pleasant Hill Parks and Recreation Department in Pleasant Hill, IA. In 2006, Mours served as the tournament director for the United States Tennis Association Pella Junior Open. His coaching career began in 2000 when he piloted the Wolverines of Dike-New Hartford for one season. In 2003, Mours took the reigns of the boy's tennis program at Pella High School. During his tenure at Pella High, Mours had nine state tournament qualifiers in five seasons, with four top-four individual finishes for four consecutive seasons and his 2004 Dutch squad won the Little Hawkeye Conference title. In four of his seasons at Pella, his teams received the Iowa High School State Athletic Association's Academic Team Award for having a combined grade point average above 3.25. Mours possesses a 66% career high school winning percentage in IAHSAA competition. Mours moved to the collegiate coaching ranks in June 2007 when he accepted a position as the head men's and women's tennis coach at Central College in Pella, IA. In a year and a half stint with the Dutch, Mours' teams never finished lower than 3rd in the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) and had 12 academic all-conference players. He piloted the Central men to a 13-13 dual mark and a third-place Iowa Conference finish. The Central women placed third in the league both years as well and compiled a 21-12-1 dual record. His 2007 women's squad received a #16 Central Region ranking from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), which was the first such ranking for the Dutch Women in school history. In the fall of 2008, he piloted the Dutch Women to their second straight third-place finish at the conference team tournament Oct. 10-11 in Iowa City. Central advanced at least one entry into the semifinals of each of the five flights at the league's individual tournament (Flights A, B and C singles; Flights A and B doubles). Mours shared the 2008 IIAC women's coach year honor with Eric Rodgers of Coe, in a vote of the league's coaches. Bryan, his wife Tracy, and daughter Rylan reside in Dubuque. Mark Noll Biography - Click Here
Mark W. Noll was named Head Women's Basketball Coach on May 1, 2007.
Noll, a native of Colfax, Wis. is a 2000 graduate of University of Wisconsin-Stout in Menomonie, Wis., where he has was assistant women's basketball coach for seven seasons overall. He has 17 years of coaching experience at all levels including collegiate, AAU and youth levels. He has been a significant presence in the recent success at UW-Stout women's basketball program in recent years which included three consecutive Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) basketball championships, WIAC tournament championships, and two "Sweet 16" finishes in the NCAA Division III National Championships. The women's team at Stout had been among the record attendance leaders for the past five seasons among Division III programs. Mark Noll's background also includes extensive experience as basketball coach, personal instructor and club promoter for the Wisconsin Amateur Athletic Union from 1989-2002. He assisted in every facet of running the nationally known Great Lakes Shootout Basketball Series. He coached AAU teams to the national level with numerous Top-8 finishes at the National Championships and Junior Olympics. He has coached over 100 players who went on to receive college scholarships, two Big Ten Freshman of the Year, two NCAA Kodak All-Americans, the top-3 all-time leading scorers in high school for the state of Wisconsin, two USA Basketball Team members, and three WNBA players. Jake Olsen Biography - Click Here
Jake Olsen , a native of Osage, Iowa is in his first season with the Spartan staff primarily coaching wide receivers. Previously Olsen was offensive coordinator at Southern Oregon University working with quarterbacks and wide receivers (2006-10). Under his tutelage at SOU his offenses produced three NAIA All-Americans: Jordan Myers (1st Team All-American Offensive Lineman); Vance Beach (1st Team All-American and record setting wide receiver); Brandon Baldwin (NAIA Offensive Player of the Year and back-to-back 1,000 yard rusher). He also coached 14 All-Independent NAIA performers while serving as teams strength and conditioning coordinator. He began his coaching career at Rockford College where he received his master's of arts in teaching degree. He coached the Regents quarterbacks and wide receivers while holding the title of Passing Game Coordinator. In 2005, the Regents re-wrote 13 school offensive records behind the arm of All-UMAC quarterback Travis Stocker who finished in Top-10 of passing efficiency. Olsen is a 2003 graduate of Wartburg College where he recieved an elementary education degree. At Wartburg he was a four-year letterwinner in both football and basketball, earning All-Iowa Conference honors in both sports. Drew Ritchie Biography - Click Here
Drew Ritchie ,a native of Madison, Wis. (La Follette High Scool), joins the University as a full-time coach after serving as varsity coach at Middleton High School in Middleton/Cross Plains, Wis. He was responsible for all coaching responsibilities in practice and administration for the entire cheerleading program at Middleton.
He was a member of the UW-Platteville cheer and stunt team (2002-2004) and also at UW-Oshkosh (2004-2007) where he was named captain in 2007. While a member at UW-Oshkosh Ritchie was part of two national championships as a Division III school (UPA-2005 and COA-2007). He earned his Bachelor of Arts Criminal Justice Degree from UW-Oshkosh in 2007. Ritchie has been a cheerleading camp coach with Central Wisconsin Cheer Camps (CWCC) 2002-2003 and 2007. He also was a volunteer assistant coach with Cheer Xcel All Stars (Las Vegas, Nev.) while he worked full-time as an officer for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department in Las Vegas, Nev., in 2009. In 2010 he took the Head Coaching Job at Middleton High School near Madison, WI where he coached the Varsity squad to the Wisconsin State Cheerleading Championships and achieved a 4th place finish. Drew is currently an active Staff Instructor for NCA (National Cheerleaders Association.) He holds AACCA safety certification and a concussion certification through the NHFS. Shane Schellsmidt Biography - Click Here
Shane Schellsmidt serves as the head baseball coach for University of Dubuque. A native of New Albin, Iowa, Schellsmidt, attended the Iowa High School baseball powerhouse, Kee High School (Lansing, Iowa).
Along with his responsibilities at the University of Dubuque Coach Schellsmidt serves as an Associate Scout for the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Owner/GM River Valley League, a Collegiate Summer Wooden Bat League, consisting of players from NCAA D I thru D III, NJCAA and NAIA. While at Kee High Schellsmidt was a member of one state championship title, two state runner-up titles, all-conference in baseball for four years, and a five-year letterman. Schellsmidt and his brother Andy Beck hold the most brother combo hits in Kee Hawk history (460). Notable high school statistic, Schellsmidt shares a state of Iowa record of doubles in a single game . Schellsmidt played two years of junior college baseball at Division 1 NJCAA, Southwestern Community College in Creston, Iowa, under legendary Coach Bill Krejci, Team USA Junior National Head Coach. He then transferred to the University of Dubuque where he earned his bachelor's degree in physical education. While playing for the Spartans, Schellsmidt battled knee injuries, but while on the field was a two-year starter at catcher and first base, also serving as a two year team captain. Memorable college moment, his first college hit was a 3-Run Homerun against Iowa Lakes Community College. Schellsmidt began his coaching career under to Iowa High School Hall of Fame Coaches in Gene Schultz and Dave Broders. As the assistant baseball coach at Kee High School, Schellsmidt had the chance to work under Gene Schultz, the nation's winningest high school coach. Robbie Sieverding Biography - Click Here
Robbie Sieverding , the 16th head coach in the history of the program, was selected to lead the University of Dubuque men's basketball program in September of 2007. Prior to becoming Head Coach he served as an Assistant for the men's basketball program. During his time at The University of Dubuque the men's basketball program has made significant improvements in the highly competitive Iowa Conference.
In his first two seasons as Head Coach Sieverding guided the Spartans to its first back to back winning seasons in eighteen years. He also led the 2009-2010 team to an 18-9 overall record which was its best record in twenty years. During his time at The University of Dubuque Sieverding has coached 15 All Conference players as well as coaching the leagues top scorer five different seasons. Sieverding led the 2010-2011 team to the IIAC championship game for the first time in school history and to it's highest seed ever in tournament play. Sieverding is a native of Bellevue, Iowa, and attended Marquette High School. In the tri-states, Sieverding is among the all-time great scorers. He finished with 1,957 points and still has the record for most points in a game with 62 Vs. Olin on Feb. 2, 1996. He was named Telegraph-Herald Player of the Year in the 1996-97 season. During his collegiate career, he played basketball at Marshalltown Community College from 1997-1998, and transferred to the University of Northern Iowa where he played from 1998-2002. Sieverding received All Missouri Valley Conference honors in 2000 and 2002; along with finishing his career 6th on the UNI All-Time scoring list, as well as 6th on the UNI All-Time assist list. Sieverding received his Bachelor of Arts degree along with a coaching minor in 2002 from the University of Northern Iowa. He completed his Masters degree in Athletic Administration in May of 2007. Wendi Wipperfurth was announced as the head softball coach at the University of Dubuque in 2011. Wipperfurth most recently was the head coach at Solon High School. She has been the Health and Physical Education teacher at Solon since 2006, assistant coach from 2007-2010, and was promoted to head coach in 2010. A native of Monroe, Wis., Wipperfurth was a four-year starter and letterwinner for the UW-Platteville Pioneers from 2002-2005. She was a two-time captain and a three-time WIAC All-Conference Selection (Honorable Mention-2003, First Team-2004, Honorable Mention-2005). Wipperfurth was an Academic All-WIAC Honoree in 2005 and earned the UW-P Pioneer Career Achievement Award in 2005. Wipperfurth ranks fifth in the UW-P record book for homeruns in a season with eight in 2004, including a grand slam on March 29, 2004. She ranks second in career homeruns for the Pioneers with 19 and ranks 19th in the WIAC record book for career home runs. During her four-year career as a Pioneer she started in 149 games and had 134 hits with a slugging percentage of .483 and 76 RBI's. As a high school prep, Wipperfurth was a First Team All-Badger South Conference catcher for the Monroe High School Cheesemakers. She has volunteered at annual camps and summer leagues from 2006-present for the Cheesemakers. Coach Zweifel enters his third season at the University of Dubuque with a great deal of enthusiasm and optimism. The Spartans return ten offensive starters and six defensive starters from the 2010 team that was crippled by major injuries.Although the Spartans only have seven seniors, they are bolstered by 39 juniors and 44 sophomores from last years squad.
Most recently, Zweifel was the Assistant Head Coach/Offensive Coordinator at Minnesota State University-Mankato where he helped lead the Mavericks to a 9-3 season, an NSIC-South Division Championship, and a berth in the NCAA Division II Football Championships. Prior to being a member of the Maverick Coaching Staff, Zweifel was the Assistant Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater for 16 seasons. During that time, the Warhawks enjoyed unparalleled success. They won six WIAC Conference Championships, played in 12 NCAA Division III playoff games and those culminated into two NCAA Division III National Championship games in 2005 and 2006.

Sarah (Fahrenkrug) Accacian joined the Spartans Athletic Training staff in August 2010. Accacian is a 2005 graduate of Clarke University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training and a minor in biology.
From 2005-2006 Accacian served as an Adjunct Athletic Trainer and Approved Clinical Instructor for Clarke covering Women's Soccer, Men's Volleyball, and Softball. Sarah continued her education at Illinois State University, graduating in 2008 with a Master of Science degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Athletic Training. While in graduate school, Accacian served as a graduate assistant for Illinois Wesleyan University. Her primary responsibilities were Men's Soccer and Women's Basketball, while assisting with Cross Country and Tennis. In Fall 2008, Sarah joined the sports medicine staff at Cazenovia College (Cazenovia, NY) as an Assistant Athletic Trainer. Viktor Bergstrand joined the University of Dubuque Spartans in 2010 as the Graduate Assistant Men's Soccer Coach. Before coming to UD, Viktor served as the starting goalkeeper for the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida.
While at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Bergstrand helped the Eagles reach three NAIA National Tournaments in four years, three regular season titles and two conference tournament titles. Bergstrand was also a part of the team that was ranked #1 in the nation in 2006. Bergstrand during his four years at Embry-Riddle collected numerous awards including three All-Conference selections, one All-Region team selection, ESPN Magazine Award, and a Second Team All-American selection. Bergstrand currently holds the Embry-Riddle all-time single-season record for shutouts (9) and the all-time career record in the same category (17). Dustin Bierman, a native of Newton, Illinois,began coaching at UD in 2008. Bierman began his basketball career at Parkland College in Champaign, Illinois. He then transferred to the University of Dubuque where he completed his playing career in 2002. While there he was named the men's basketball team MVP following his junior season in 2001.
Bierman started his coaching career in 2003 as a student-assistant under Marty McDermott at UD. He continued on with the Spartans as a graduate assistant helping the basketball program with scouting of opponents, breaking down film, on the floor instructions, and the recruiting of student-athletes. After two seasons with University of Dubuque as a graduate assistant, Bierman accepted a coaching position at Ashford University in Clinton, Iowa as the head women's golf coach and assistant men's basketball coach. Bierman help lead the basketball program to their best finish in eight seasons with a 16-13 recorded and a top four finish in the Midwest Collegiate Conference. He also led the women's golf program to the top level of the conference by finishing in the top three each season. In April of 2008, Bierman accepted the assistant men's basketball position on head coach Robbie Sieverding staff. Dana Harrold joined the University of Dubuque coaching staff in 2004 after attending her alma mater from 2000-2004.
The Jesup High School native, prepped at Jesup High School where she had a standout career in several sports. In her senior basketball season at Jesup, she led her team to the first ever girls state tournament berth in the school's history. She holds records for most career/season assists, 2nd most points, and 3rd most steals in a career. Harrold was named all-conference and All-State in both basketball and softball. From 2000-2004 Harrold played point guard for the University of Dubuque, setting the 2nd best record in school history of 14-12 her senior season. She finished her career as the school's second leading scorer, the all-time career assist and steals leader. Harrold was named All-IIAC three seasons and named team MVP and Papa Johns Female Athlete of the Year her junior and senior seasons. Jon Kyte enters his first season on the University of Dubuque staff in 2011, directing the defensive line and coordinating the special teams. Prior to coming to Dubuque he spent a season on the Augsburg College (Minn.) staff, directing the linebackers, defensive line and special teams. He also served as video coordinator and assistant recruiting coordinator for the Auggies. He coached one MIAC All-Conference player. Kyte served for two seasons (2008-2009) as an assistant coach (tight ends) at Division II Winona State University (MN), where he coached two all-conference NSIC tight ends. In 2007, he was an assistant coach at Anamosa High Schoolworking with the offensive and defensive lines. He also served two seasons (2004-2005) as a graduate assistant coach at Winona State University (MN). Where he was a part of 2 conference championships, qualified for the playoffs in 2004, coached the 2005 NSIC defensive player of the year and 3 All Conference players. Kyte was a defensive lineman at Wartburg for two seasons (2000-2001) and finished as a student assistant for the last two seasons (2002-2003), where he was part of two Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship and NCAA Division III playoff qualifying squads. Elizabeth Mattson joined the Spartans Athletic Training staff in August 2011. Mattson is a 2009 graduate of University of Wisconsin- Stevens Point with a Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training and a minor in nutrition.
During the summer of 2008 and 2009, Mattson had an internship with the Wisconsin Woodchucks in Wausau, Wis., a collegiate wooden bat league. She continued her education at Illinois State University, graduating in 2011 with a Master of Science degree in Athletic Training. While at Illinois State, she handled all aspects of healthcare for Women's Gymnastics. Drew Nystrom Biography - Click Here
Drew Nystrom, a native of Crystal Lake, Ill., joined the Spartan football program in 2011 after spending the 2010 season as a graduate assistant with the University of Memphis Tigers. While a part of the Memphis football staff, Nystrom assisted in leading the Tiger offense to rank No. 1 nationally in red zone scoring offense. He also assisted in coaching senior offensive lineman, Dominik Riley, to being named 2nd Team All-Conference USA. Prior to his time with at Memphis, Nystrom was a part of the University of Delaware football staff in 2009 which finished 2nd in the Colonial Athletic Association in passing (243.4 yards per game) and fifth in total offense (355.0 yards per game). Nystrom worked with Corey Nicholson as he completed his season with a 2nd Team All-CAA performance for the Fightin' Blue Hens. In 2008, Nystrom served as tight ends coach for the Wabash College Little Giants on their way to a 10-2 finish in which they took home the North Coast Athletic Conference title and earned a berth to the second round of the NCAA Division III playoffs. The Little Giants reached as high as No. 2 in the national polls and finished with both tight ends, Scott Liska and Chad Sorenson, earning 1st Team and Honorable Mention All-NCAC honors, respectively. An alumnus of Bowling Green State University, Nystrom earned four letters as an offensive tackle for the Falcons from 2003-2007. In his time at BGSU, the Falcons finished with a 38-24 record and earned three trips to post-season bowl games, Motor City Bowl (2003) and the GMAC Bowl (2004, 2008). Nystrom started 34 games in his career before capping it off by being named 2nd Team All-Mid American Conference and 1st Team Academic All-MAC as a senior. Mike Schmidt is in his 3rd season with the University of Dubuque football program. He serves as the Defensive Coordinator and Linebackers coach. Schmidt's recruiting area is Central and Western Wisconsin. Since coming to UD, Coach Schmidt has been a versatile member of the Spartan Coaching Staff. He served as the Defensive Backs coach in 2009 and the Offensive Line coach in 2010 before moving back to the defensive side. Coach Schmidt came to the University of Dubuque after a stint as a Graduate Assistant at Minnesota State University-Mankato in 2008. While at MSU, Mike worked as the Defensive Line Coach. The Mavericks finished with a 9-3 season, an NSIC-South Division Championship, and a berth in the NCAA Division II Football Championships. Coach Schmidt coached 1 All-American and all four starting members of the Defensive Line were NSIC All-Conference members. Mike graduated from UW-La Crosse where he was a Fullback on the Football team and an Outfielder/First Baseman for the Baseball team. Tyler Simmons begins his first season with the Spartans in 2011 as an assistant linebacker coach. Before joining the Spartans he worked at Lisle Senior High School in Lisle, Ill. Simmons served as the JV offensive and defensive line coach, freshmen offensive coordinator, and varsity assistant working with the offensive side in 2008, 2009 and defensive side in 2010.
Prior to his time at Lisle, he was sophomore linebacker coach at Naperville Central in Naperville, Ill., in 2007 and freshmen offensive line and linebacker coach at Hempstead in 2006. An alumnus of UD, Simmons played linebacker and center for the Spartans from 2002-2005 and graduated with a degree in education in 2006. Gene Will joined the University of Dubuque in 2011 after previously spending four seasons at Wabash College. While at Wabash his responsibilities consisted of head JV coach, wide receivers position coach, and was the video coordinator.
During his four years, Wabash competed in the national playoffs three times advancing as far as the Elite-8. He coached six receivers to all-conference honors, and twice had a player named pre-season All-American. He also worked on special teams coaching the return men, where the team finished as high as #2 and #6 in the nation in punt and kickoff returns. His 2009 receiving corps caught 231 passes for 3,168 yards and 29 touchdowns. Junior Kody LeMond set Wabash and NCAC records for receiving yards in 2008, making 73 catches for 1,228 yards and 14 scores. Prior to Wabash, he spent two seasons at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater as a graduate assistant for both of the Warhawks' national runner-up teams before joining the Wabash staff in 2007. Will earned his master's of science at UW-Whitewater, while also working in the academic advising and testing office. A three-year letterman as a wide receiver of the University of Dayton Flyers' football team, he was a member of two PFL championship teams. During his sophomore season, the Flyers won their first I-AA Mid-Major national championship. Will majored in sports management at Dayton, with a Minor in Exercise Fitness. Travis Zajac rejoins the Spartans football staff in 2011. Zajac served as an assistant coach for the Spartans from 2001-2008 coaching inside linebackers and offensive line. During his previous eight seasons on the Spartan staff he coached nine All-Iowa Conferenece performers. For two seasons (2009, 2010) he was an assistant football coach at Wahlert Catholic High School serving as defensive coordinator, coaching linebackers and offensive line. During his tenure he coached 11 All-Mississippi Valley Conference student-athletes. He is a member of the faculty at UD as a Teaching Specialist Faculty in the Core Curriculum. Along with his teaching responsibilities, he serves as the coordinator of Voices/Values, a program dedicated to developing personal empowerment for students, faculty and staff. Zajac is a native of Sturgeon Bay, Wis. And graduated from Southern Door High School in 1997. As a prep Zajac earned all-conference honors in football. He was a team captain, two-year starter, and an all-conference and All-American selection playing as an inside linebacker at Mount Senario College. Ryan Adamovich is a graduate assistant for the Spartans in 2011. He is a 2010 graduate of Wisconsin Lutheran College where he majored in communications and minored in coaching. He played wide receiver and started for the Warriors for three seasons (2006-2009) He finished with 71 catches for 743 yards and six touchdowns and was a member of the first football team to finish above .500 in conference at WLC. A native of Kaukauna, Wis., he was a two-year letterwinner, team captain, and an All-Fox Valley Association Honorable Mention as a prep. Jenny Ewert joined the Dubuque coaching staff as the graduate assistant volleyball coach in 2011. She is originally from St. James, Minnesota where she attended St. James High School and played volleyball, basketball, and softball. For the Saints, Ewert holds school records for match digs, season digs, and career digs in volleyball, while named All-Conference for two years, and First Team All-State her Senior year. In her softball career, Ewert holds the school record for batting average, was named All-Conference for three years, and First Team All-State her Junior and Senior years. Taylor Herbst Biography - Click Here
Taylor Herbst is a native of Dubuque, Iowa and joined the Spartans staff in 2011 as a graduate assistant. He was a member of the Iowa Hawkeyes from 2006-2009 earning the Team Lead Award on Special Teams in 2008 and on Offense in 2007. He is a 2009 graduate of Iowa as an Interdepartmental Studies (Health Science) major. In high school, Herbst played for Spartan assistant coach John Osweiler and earned National Honor Society and Academic All-Conference honors. He earned first team All-Conference honors as a junior and senior. He was team captain as a senior. He lettered twice in football as a quarterback and defensive back. He completed 92-181 passes of 1,112 yards 14 touchdowns and a junior, setting school records for completions and attempts in a season. He completed 62-127 attempts as a senior for 886 yards and 16 touchdowns as a senior. He earned four letters in track, competing in the 200, 400, and 800 meter events. Kendall Loggins Biography - Click Here
Kendall Loggins joined the Spartan family as the women's graduate assistant soccer coach in 2011. Before coming to the University of Dubuque she played soccer for the University of Cincinnati for four years as a starting defender, midfielder and forward. She helped lead the Bearcats to their first appearance in the Big East tournament in 2008 and made the NCAA Division I All-Ohio team in 2010.
