Environmental Science

Environmental Science is by nature an interdisciplinary area of study concerned with the biological, hydrological and geochemical processes and interactions that shape our natural environment. The increasing impact of human beings upon the natural world has resulted in a broad range of problems involving our natural resources and environmental quality.Because of its interdisciplinary nature, the Environmental Science academic program is broader than most other science programs and is designed to provide a unique integration of chemistry, geology and biology .

The Environmental Science Program is interdisciplinary and offers a BS degree. The degree is offered with a concentration in biology.

• the biology, chemistry and geology of natural systems
• impacts on natural systems
• analytic techniques
• data treatment and report writing; and
• cultural and political influences on environmental policies. Students apply knowledge and technical skills in experiential learning with a hands-on emphasis. A major theme is environmental stewardship.

• A working field site on the Mississippi River. Frentress Lake in Illinois has served as a field station for UD since the 1970's. In 2000, the field station was updated with the purchase of a house boat. The new boat is available for floating classroom trips up and down the Mississippi River. It houses water quality instruments, aquatic ecology equipment, and microscopes.
• Emphasis on technology and research skills. Students are expected to be proficient in the latest types of analyses in geochemistry and ecology. Examples include Geographic Information Systems software, ion chromatographic water chemistry analysis, radio telemetry, and automatic water level probes. Students also conduct a guided undergraduate research project to "put everything together" during their senior year.
• Real life experience. Because competition for jobs in environmental science is very high, students can prepare themselves for employment by participating in internships during the semester or summer. Contacts with natural resource agencies in the tri-state area facilitate the process of finding positions.
• Emphasis on biology, geology, and chemistry. Environmental science students learn in an interdisciplinary atmosphere. Students interested in wildlife also learn about local hydrology and water chemistry. Students interested in toxicology also take courses in botany and zoology.
