The Department of Sociology seeks to enable students to appreciate the complexities of social life and develop an awareness of the connections between themselves, their communities, society at large, and the global environment.
A major in sociology requires 30 credit hours consisting of 12 credit hours of department core: SC111 Introduction to Sociology SC331 Social Stratification SC335 Social Research SC336 Social Theory Eighteen credit hours in sociology or from the following with permission from the chair of the sociology department: PS310 Social Psychology IS315 Developing Nations of the World CO210 Interpersonal and Small Group Communication HS323 Ethnicity in United States History A major in sociology with a concentration in criminal justice is also available and requires: SC111 Introduction to Sociology SC112 Social Problems SC223 Juvenile Delinquency SC231 Criminology SC232 Criminal Justice SC311 Inequalities of Race, Class, and Gender SC331 Social Stratification SC335 Social Research SC336 Social Theory SC385/485 Internship (3 credit hours required) Six credit hours of electives in sociology or BA345 Business Law 1 BA346 Business Law 2 HS323 Ethnicity in U.S. History PO468 Constitutional Law PS354 Abnormal Psychology A minor in sociology consists of 21 credit hours in sociology including: SC111 Introduction to Sociology SC331 Social Stratification SC335 Social Research SC336 Social Theory nine credit hours selected in consultation with the department chair. A minor in gender studies Prepares students to deal with interpersonal relationship on any job. As women are increasingly participating in the public work force, an educated sensitivity of women's concern is desirable, especially in management positions. Many governmental policy programs are also addressed to women and children: child support programs, battered women programs, labor studies, marriage counseling, and government-sponsored research on gender issues. Gender studies program will also enrich human understanding and contribute to the shaping of culture in the work place, market place, and in the home. The gender studies minor consists of 21 credit hours. The following 15 credit hours are core to the gender studies minor: SC111 Introduction to Sociology SC112 Social Problems SC210 Marriage and the Family SC322 Women and Men in Contemporary Society SC311 Inequalities of Race, Class, and Gender Six credit hours can be selected from the following courses: ED345 Child, Family, School and Community Relationships EN362 Literature by Women HS269 Women's History PS367 Psychology of Gender SC367 Topics (with approval of the department chair) For the AA degree in gender studies, 18 credit hours in sociology are required, including: SC111 Introduction to Sociology SC112 Contemporary Social Problems SC210 Marriage and the Family Other courses in consultation with the department chair The department offers the BA and AA degrees.
