Sociology and Criminal Justice
The Department of Sociology seeks to enable students to appreciate the complexities of social life and develop an awareness of the connections between themselves, their communities, society at large, and the global environment.

A major in sociology requires 30 credit hours consisting of 12 credit hours of department core:

SC336  Social Theory
Eighteen credit hours in sociology or from the following with permission from the chair of the sociology department:

A major in sociology with a concentration in criminal justice is also available and requires:

A minor in sociology consists of 21 credit hours in sociology including:

nine credit hours selected in consultation with the department chair.

A minor in gender studies
Prepares students to deal with interpersonal relationship on any job. As women are increasingly participating in the public work force, an educated sensitivity of women's concern is desirable, especially in management positions. Many governmental policy programs are also addressed to women and children: child support programs, battered women programs, labor studies, marriage counseling, and government-sponsored research on gender issues. Gender studies program will also enrich human understanding and contribute to the shaping of culture in the work place, market place, and in the home.

The gender studies minor consists of 21 credit hours. The following 15 credit hours are core to the gender studies minor:

SC210  Marriage and the Family
SC322  Women and Men in Contemporary Society
SC311  Inequalities of Race, Class, and Gender
Six credit hours can be selected from the following courses:

SC367  Topics (with approval of the department chair)

For the AA degree in gender studies, 18 credit hours in sociology are required, including:

SC210  Marriage and the Family
Other courses in consultation with the department chair  

The department offers the BA and AA degrees.
