To arrange for a tutor, please contact Jennifer Erickson at campus extension 3570 or email her at Jgericks@dbq.edu . Please be sure to identify the subject area in which you need help, as well as the dates and times that you are available to meet with the tutor.
DISABILITY SERVICES
The University of Dubuque provides accommodations to students with documented disabilities when requested by the student. The accommodations provided to students are specific to each individual and are based on the recommendations provided within the disability documentation. Students requesting accommodations are required to provide a copy of their current disability documentation to Jennifer Erickson. DISABILITY RESOURCES
The ASC provides a number of disability accommodations for students with both physical and learning disabilities. The University is able to scan text books for individuals who have visual or learning disabilities so that the text book can be read aloud to the student using Text Aloud. The University also provides audio book players for students when it is possible to obtain text books through publishers or Readings for the Blind and Dyslexic. Students who need large print or print enhancement can use ZoomText or through the OVAC ZACC closed circuit television, while students with learning disabilities or literacy difficulties can utilize reading pens that highlight individual words using a small scanner to make both electronic and paper-based text accessible. Students can utilize equipment such as Readingpens,Video Eye, Daisy Readers and CCTV to overcome the barriers to learning. The ASC also provides disability accommodations such as extended time for testing, quiet location for testing, tests read aloud or a scribe for testing.
WRITING CENTER
The Writing Center has writing tutors who can help students explore ideas for paper topics, improve writing skills, review grammar, and gain confidence in their proofreading ability. Students meet with a tutor one-on-one to discuss writing and assignments. Students can drop in to receive assistance from peer tutors, or make an appointment with a professional tutor. All services are free of charge for UD students. Writing Center tutors are available during regular Academic Success Center hours. For more information or to schedule an appointment, contact the Writing Center at (563) 589-3262.
LEARNING LABS
The goal of the University of Dubuque's Learning Lab's is to enhance the academic career of the participating students by assisting them in becoming independent and accomplished learners. This goal is achieved by reinforcing classroom teaching, provision of tutoring services, participation in small study skill groups, and through academic remediation. For more information regarding the Learning Labs, contact Steve Goerdt at (563) 589-3218 or sgoerdt@dbq.edu.
ACADEMIC PROBATION SERVICES
The goal of placing a student on academic probation is to allow the student an opportunity to remedy academic problems. Students on academic probation need to practice strategies of academic excellence throughout the semester in order to reach a grade point average of 2.0, which is required for graduation at the University of Dubuque.
Once placed on academic probation, students are notified by the Registrar's Office of their probation status, and they are then directed to come to the Academic Success Center for tutoring. Tutors will work with the students on such issues as time management, prioritization of tasks, and effective study strategies while also providing academic assistance in specific subject areas. For more information please contact Jennifer Erickson at (563) 589-3570, or jgericks@dbq.edu.
TESTING CENTER
The Academic Success Center serves as an alternative testing center for faculty and students of the University.
Students requesting disability accommodations must provide a copy of the Verification of Individualized Student Accommodations to the testing proctor, and will receive priority scheduling within the ASC testing center.
The ASC testing services for students who do not receive disability accommodations have been established to compliment the classroom examination process. The services offered by the ASC are not intended to replace classroom exams, and should be utilized when extenuating circumstances do not allow an individual student to test during the normal class period.
The front of the Exam Proctor Form (found here Exam Proctoring Form) must be completed prior to every exam that we proctor within the ASC in order to assure that testing is done within the parameters established by the instructor. Please fill out the form completely, and attach it to as many hard copies of the test as are needed. Form must be completed for all computer/Moodle tests, and sent to the ASC in hard copy before the test. The ASC will not be responsible for running copies of exams or the Exam Proctor Form.
Students are responsible for setting up an appointment to have exams proctored in the ASC PRIOR to the exam proctoring time. Students who drop in without scheduling may find that the exam room is not available to them.
The A.S.C. also offers College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) testing to the community. Individuals from the tri-state area are welcome to come to the ASC to take CLEP tests for credits that may transfer to colleges throughout the nation. For more information regarding CLEP testing, contact Kay Smith at (563) 589-3262 or kasmith@dbq.edu.
The A.S.C. can proctor college level examinations for members of the community. Tests can be proctored between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 7:30 a.m. through 11:30 a.m. on Friday. The fee for this service is $15.00 per exam. Please contact Jennifer Erickson at (563) 589-3570 or kasmith@dbq.edu for more information or to schedule an exam.
ATHLETIC STUDY TABLES
The Athletic Study Table program is designed to provide an academic support system for student-athletes. Study table requirements are set and enforced by the coaching staff for each sport.
Only hours recorded under the ASC's supervision will count towards the hourly requirements. Hours spent with ASC tutors and English or Math Learning Labs will count toward the required number of study table hours if logged appropriately. Students must sign in at the A.S.C. front desk to earn credit for study hours.
Questions about study tables should be directed to Kay Smith, A.S.C. Administrative Assistant, at (563) 589-3262 or kasmith@dbq.edu.
