Cross Country

The University of Dubuque cross country team provides a comprehensive fun-filled, endurance experience! As a member of the team, you will learn about energy system development and education, injury pre-habilitation, strength training, nutrition education, and more.

Highlights of cross country include: training runs along the picturesque Heritage Trail (one of Iowa's most scenic trails winds through 26 miles of high bluffs, many river overlooks, and rugged woodlands) and Mines of Spain (this recreation area, is a National Historic Landmark, located on 1,380 acres of beautiful wooded and prairie land just south of Dubuque). In 2012, the Spartans finished with it's best ever finish in the Iowa Conference Championships with a score of 159 and a fifth place finish.

Women's Cross Country Places 18th at NCAA Regionals

Fabiola Ortiz ran to a 38th place finish and the University of Dubuque women's cross country team placed 18th at the NCAA Division III Central Regional Meet hosted by Central College.

Spartan XC Regional Preview and Meet Information

The University of Dubuque women's and men's cross country team will travel to Pella, Iowa to run in the 2014 NCAA Division III Central Regional on Saturday, Nov. 15. The women's team will complete on the 6,000m course while the men will face a challenging 8,000m course on the campus at Central College.

Chad Gunnelson is in his fourth year leading the University of Dubuque Track & Field and Cross Country programs. The 2013 IIAC Men’s Outdoor Track Co-Coach of the Year and 2013 University of Dubuque Staff of the Year award winner has helped the Track and Cross Country programs make significant strides during his short time at UD.

Through his first three seasons as Head Track & Field Coach, Gunnelson led the Women’s team to their best Indoor and Outdoor Conference finishes in school history in 2014 and the Men to their best Indoor Conference finish in school history in 2013. As the Head Cross Country Coach, he coached the Women’s team to their best ever Conference finish in 2012.

Coach Gunnelson has been pivotal in the individual development of the Track & Field and Cross Country student-athletes at UD. He has coached eight individuals to the NCAA Championships, resulting in one National Champion and four All-American honors. Within the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC), he has coached 21 Conference Champions and 112 All-Conference Performers. Additionally, his athletes have broken 35 school records, placing 314 new marks on the school’s Top-10 All-Time lists for Track and Field and 11 marks on the school’s Top-25 All-Time lists for Cross Country.

Off the track, the Women’s Cross Country team was named All-Academic by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) in 2011, 2012 and 2013 where the team boasted a GPA of 3.63, ranking them 18th in the nation. The Men’s Cross Country team has also added USTFCCCA honors both in 2012 and 2013. The Women’s Track and Field team was named All-Academic by the USTFCCCA in 2013 and 2014.  The Track and Field program has recognized 36 IIAC Academic All-Conference Honorees and the Cross Country program has seen 12 IIAC Academic All-Conference Honors awarded.  The Track & Field program was also honored with three Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District Awards, three USTFCCCA All-Academic Individuals, and one CoSIDA Second Team Academic All-American.

Prior to his arrival at UD, Gunnelson, a native of Madison, Wis., spent six years as the Head Track & Field Coach at Madison East High School for both the boy’s and girl’s teams. At Madison East, Gunnelson coached 22 school record holders and back-to-back state champions in 2010 and 2011. Gunnelson resurrected track and field at Madison East by tripling the team size during his time there. In his final year with the Purgolders, the team earned a 3.24 GPA, had four sectional champions, and placed all four state qualifiers on the podium at the WIAA state track meet, including a state champion.

Along with coaching, Gunnelson was the Owner and CEO of Athletic Republic, a sports performance training facility near Madison, WI, from 2007 to 2011 where he built Athletic Republic into the largest training facility in the Madison area. Over 600 youth, high school, college, professional, and Olympic athletes trained and improved their athletic ability each year.

He is a frequent clinic speaker and a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), and USA Track and Field (USATF). He currently holds the USTFCCCA Jumps Specialist Certification, Endurance Specialist Certification, Track & Field Technical Certification, Program Management Certification, Level 1 Coaching Certification from USATF, and is CPR/AED/First Aid certified by the American Red Cross.

Coach Gunnelson now resides in Potosi, Wis. with his wife Melissa, their son Dash, and his step-children Taylor and Evan.

Geoff Gundlach begins his fourth year as an assistant coach for both the Cross Country and Track & Field teams, and third season as director of operations.

The Spartans distance events continue to show significant improvement since Gundlach’s arrival in 2011. During his tenure, UD has seen 63 new Top 10 performances in school history in addition to six school records fall in events 800M and up. In Cross Country, Gundlach has coached 11 runners to Top 25 performances in school history and helped guide the women’s team to their best ever conference finish in school history in 2012. 

Off the track, the Women’s Cross Country team was named All-Academic by the USTFCCCA in 2011, 2012 and 2013, boasting a team GPA of 3.63 in 2013 which ranked them 18th in the nation. Men’s Cross Country qualified as a USTFCCCA All-Academic Team in 2012 and 2013. Overall, the Cross Country program has recognized 12 individual IIAC Academic All-Conference Honors. 

A native of Madison, Wis., Gundlach competed for the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in both Cross Country and Track & Field. While a member of the UW-O Cross Country team from 2004-07, he earned four letters and competed at the Division-III Nationals in 2006, where UW-O finished 9th overall. As a member of the UW-O Track & Field team from 2005-2009 Gundlach placed in the mile, 5000m, and distance medley relays at the WIAC Indoor and Outdoor Championships. He was also a member of the 2009 UW-Oshkosh National Championship teams, both Indoor and Outdoor.

Gundlach received his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and his Master’s in Communication from the University of Dubuque. He currently holds an Endurance Specialist Certification from the USTFCCCA, Level 1 Coaching Certification from USATF, and is CPR/AED/First Aid certified by the American Red Cross.
