UD's Career Counseling and Placement Assistance: This service is provided to current UD students and UD Alumni.Whether you are seeking to change majors, undecided, or seeking a career transition, we are here to assist. We provide a four-step formula to help you make an informed decision about what career you wish to pursue and enhance your chances of securing meaningful employment.Part I: Self- Awareness; Part II: Career Exploration; Part III: Field Experience; and Part IV: The Job Search.

To assist in this process the following resources may be provided:

Career Exploration Inventory (CEI):A paper and pencil guide for exploring work, leisure, and learning. The CEI is more than a career interest test.It helps you explore and plan three major areas of your life; your work, leisure activities, and education or learning. It asks you to respond to 128 items and to score your responses in relation to 16 interest clusters. This process will help you identify which career leisure, and educational goals best fit your interests. The CEI will also help you find information on occupations, leisure activities, and educational programs to consider more carefully.

Myers-Briggs Type Indicator Form Q (MBTI STEP II Form Q):A self-assessment, the MBTI is a short 30 minute questionnaire based on the personality type theories of Carl Jung.It was created so that individuals could recognize and appreciate their preferred ways of interacting with others. Why is this important? The importance the MBTI lies in exploring how different people relate to one another. What impact does the personality of one co-worker have on another in the work setting? How is personality related to leadership and management, teaching and learning? The MBTI instrument determines preferences on four dichotomies:Extraversion/Introversion; Sensing/Intuition; Thinking/Feeling and Judging/Perceiving.Combinations of these preferences result in 16 distinct personality types.Understanding characteristics unique to each personality type, provides insight on how they influence an individuals way of communicating and interacting with others.

Recommended Top Employment Search Engines/Databases on the Web (recommendation by the Iowa Association of Internships and Cooperative Education & Career Counseling Professionals of Iowa)

Search Engines

To find information you seek, there are many search engines available. However, google commands about 80% of internet searches. The engines reduce your search time for various topics related to your search including industry, company, and career-related information. Some of the popular search engines include:

www.google.com

www.excite.com

www.msn.com

www.lyycos.com

www.infoseek.com

www.yahoo.com

Blogs

The latest craze seems to be the blogs and discussion boards where you can share information and access expert (and not so expert) information on every topic under the sun. A blog is like a personal journal and is short for web log. They contain content, commentary, links and contacts. To find blogs that mention an organization you may be researching, use one of the search engines and look for the organization's name and the word "blog".

Networking Sites

These sites such as Linked in are useful to advance your networking and access people who work in industries and companies and who may otherwise not be available to you for networking.

Company Data Bases

The publisher sites for company information are excellent for gathering information on public, as well as, private companies and non-for-profit organizations. Some are free and some fee-based. The best known are:

Dunn & Bradstreet (fee based ratings) www.dnbmdd.com/mddi

Web Crawlers

There areinnumerable job sites and web crawlers to help minimize the time you spendsearching through these sites for potential opportunities that match your background and job goals. That is a good thing because you can expend all your waking hours on surfing the net for job leads! The problem with that strategy is you would not have any time to follow-up on them. With web crawlers, you can reduce your time investment and focus on networking and following -up on potential leads. A couple of user-friendly crawlers for job leads include:

www.simplyhired.com

www.indeed.com

Career and Job Sites

There are a vast array of career sites sponsored by independent sources, universities, associations, geographical regions, and publishers. Many also have associated job boards. In addition, there are many separate job boards. The web crawlers can minimize your time on these sites; however, there may be some industry-specific, job/career-specific, or executive and college level sites that are particularly useful to you. These you may wish to routinely check, or they may incorporate a web crawler to send you listings in your area of search. In addition, many of these sites contain salary information useful in negotiations. Following are some popular sites:
