However, google commands about 80% of internet searches. The engines reduce your search time for various topics related to your search including industry, company, and career-related information. Some of the popular search engines include: Blogs The latest craze seems to be the blogs and discussion boards where you can share information and access expert (and not so expert) information on every topic under the sun. A blog is like a personal journal and is short for web log. They contain content, commentary, links and contacts. To find blogs that mention an organization you may be researching, use one of the search engines and look for the organization's name and the word "blog". Networking Sites These sites such as Linkedin are useful to advance your networking and access people who work in industries and companies and who may otherwise not be available to you for networking. Company Data Bases The publisher sites for company information are excellent for gathering information on public, as well as, private companies and non-for-profit organizations. Some are free and som fee-based. The best known are: Dunn & Bradstreet (fee based ratings) www.dnbmdd.com/mddi Standard & Poors (Stocks & ratings) www.standardandpoors.com http://www.netadvantage.standardpoor.com/NASApp/NetAdvantage/index.do Moody's (Stocks & Bonds) www.moodys.com Hoovers (Free Basic Company Info) www.hoovers.com Edgar (SEC & Annual Reports) www.edgaronline.com Wall Street Research Network www.wsm.com Forbes (Business & Finance) www.forbes.com/200best/ Inc. (Small Business) www.inc.com Biz Web www.bizweb.com Companies Online www.companiesonline.com Fast Company www.fastcompany.com Red Herring www.herring.com SEC Information www.wecinfo.com Thomas Register www.thomasregister.com Corp Tech www.corptech.com Industry Information Sites Industry information can be found in many association sites. The following are survey and statistical sources along with business rankings: Industry Surveys www.investools.com Labor Statistics www.jobstar.org Business Week www.businessweek.com Forbes www.forbes.com Fortune www.fortune.com Value line www.valueline.com NAICS - North American Industry Classification System http://ww.census-gov/.epcd/www/naics.html Web Crawlers There areinnumerable job sites and web crawlers to help minimize the time you spendsearching through these sites for potential opportunities that match your background and job goals. That is a good thing because you can expend all your waking hours on surfing the net for job leads! The problem with that strategy is you would not have any time to follow-up on them. With web crawlers, you can reduce your time investment and focus on networking and following -up on potential leads. A couple of user-friendly crawlers forjob leads include: Career and Job Sites There are a vast array of career sites sponsored by independent soruces, universities, associations, geographical regions, and publishers. Many also have associated job boards. In addition, there are many separate job boards. Theweb crawlers can minimize your time on these sites; however, there may be some industry-specific, job/career-specific, or executive and college levelssites that are particularly useful to you. These you may wish to routinely check, or they may incorporatea webcrawler to send you listings in your area of search. In addition, many of these sites contain salary information useful in negotiations. Following are some popular sites: Career sites Executive Level: College Level: Geographic-Specific: Compensation Research: Search Consultant Sites:
