Women's Soccer Hold Marian Scoreless in Opener

The University of Dubuque women's soccer team opened their 2014 season with success on Friday night with a 2-0 victory. The Spartans picked tied for #3 in the Iowa Conference pre-season poll and return 10 starters and 24 letterwinners from last season's 16-5-0 team. Wednesday morning the Spartans earned their first ever, national ranking in Division III when the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) released their Sept. 9 poll with the Spartans ranked #22 nationally. UD also earned their highest regional ranking with a #2 ranking in the North Region.

The University of Dubuque women's soccer team earned their sixth shut-out of the season on Saturday after taking the contest over the Buena Vista University Beavers 3-0. UD led 1-0 after the opening period after a goal by Megan Siepler in 35:28, the Spartans extended their led to 2-0 just three minutes into the second half when Melanie Prudhomme scored at 48:52. Katie Lynn added a third Spartan goal at 60:51.

Spartans Unbeaten in IIAC After Loras Victory

The University of Dubuque women's soccer team scored first and held a lead throughout most of the game on Wednesday evening, but needed two overtimes to complete the exciting victory over the Loras College Duhawks at the Rock Bowl by a score of 3-2. The last time the Spartans captured regular season victory over Loras was Oct. 21, 2009 which was also the Duhawks last regular season IIAC loss. The series since 2009 has provided three, double overtimes games. In 2009, the Spartans won the IIAC Tournament and advanced into the NCAA Division III National Championships.

The University of Dubuque women's soccer team ranked #7 in North Region earned their 10th victory of the season and the 199th win for coach Jason Berna at UD. The Spartans jumped out to an early halftime lead 3-0 off goals by Megan Siepler (16:24), Melissa Sawyer (28:39), and Kyleigh McLaughlin (36:11) off an assist by Melanie Prudhomme. UD stretched it to 5-0 for a final over the Coe College Kohawks after McLaughlin added her second goal of the night at 62:29. Just 10 seconds later the Spartans scored again with Sawyer collecting her second goal of the night off a penalty kick.

Sawyer Secures IIAC Women’s Soccer Defensive Performer of the Week

The University of Dubuque women’s soccer team, under the direction of head coach Jason Berna, learned the Spartans will travel to Wheaton, Ill. to compete in the regional on Nov. 14-15 at Joe Bean Stadium on the campus of Wheaton College. The Spartans will play the Illinois Wesleyan University Titans on Nov. 14 at 1:30 p.m. (CST), the winner will advance to Saturday’s Nov. 15 final at 1:00 p.m. (CST).

Women's Soccer Named Team Ethic and Sportsmanship Award Winner

The 2014 IIAC Champion University of Dubuque women's team received the Bronze Award of the 2014 College Team Ethics and Sportsmanship Award, which recognizes teams who exhibit fair play, sporting behavior and adherence to the laws of the game, as reflected by the number of yellow caution cards or red ejection cards they are shown by referees throughout the season. The special recognition was awarded to 35 teams, who received no reds and a maximum of 10 yellows cards throughout the season.
