Women's Soccer Picked to Finish Third in Coaches Poll

The University of Dubuque Women's Soccer team was picked to finish third in the Iowa Conference Coaches Preseason Poll. The Spartans return eight starters and 15 letter winners from last season's 11-7-2 team that place third in the league with 13 points and a 4-2-1 record. UD advanced to the IIAC Tournament Finals.

After a slow start, the Spartans exploded for six goals in the second half on their way to a 7-1 victory over Lawrence University (0-1). The 3-2 victory against Marian University (1-2) was the 125th overall victory for the program and Head Coach Jason Berna. The Spartans improved to 4-0 on the season.

After suffering its first loss of the season on Saturday, the Spartans rebounded with a 3-1 win at Monmouth College (5-3-0). Dubuque held the Scots to zero shots on goal in the second half. UD is now 7-1-0 on the year.

The University of Dubuque Women’s Soccer team went head-to-head with one of the nation’s top teams on Saturday afternoon at Oyen Field. The Spartans took #14 Loras to double overtime before losing 3-2. As the rain picked up in the second half, UD turned up the aggression on the offensive end of the field leading to two goals. Dubuque is now 7-2-0 overall and 0-1-0 in Iowa Conference action.

The Spartans victory was their seventh straight over Cornell with a combined score of 28-5 during the winning streak. UD took the lead early in the first half on a goal by Katie Lynn.

The Spartans used two second half goal, scored less than 20 seconds apart, to pull away from Coe for a 3-1 victory. Midfielder Katie Lynn assisted on all three UD goals.

Duncan Named IIAC Performer of the Week

University of Dubuque junior Tiffany Duncan was named IIAC Women’s Soccer (Defensive) Performer of the Week. Duncan recorded four saves in the Spartans 2-0 shutout win against Cornell. She won her 10th game of the year against Coe in which she had one save in the 2-1 victory.

UD boastes a 1.06 goals against average while UWP holds a 1.13 goals against average. The sixth ranked regionally Spartans are 10-4-0 on the year.

The Spartans defeated Wartburg 2-1 on Saturday afternoon. Alexandra Watkins became the fourth Spartan to score 100 career points with her game winning goal in the 72nd minute of play.

The University of Dubuque Women’s Soccer team wrapped up the regular season with a 1-0 win against Simpson on Tuesday afternoon. The victory was the fourth straight for the Spartans. Alexandra Watkins game winning goal was the 12th of her career, tying a school record. Dubuque finished the regular season with a 14-4-0 record and tied for second place in the Iowa Conference at 5-2.

The Spartans were unable to overcome an early deficit in the 2-0 loss to Loras College. UD has made it to the IIAC Tournament Finals in back-to-back years and three of the last five years. Dubuque finishes the 2013 season with a 16-5-0 record.

A standout in Soccer, Basketball, and Track & Field, Barwick was an Academic All-American in Soccer (First Team) and Track (Second Team) while also being named Academic All-Iowa Conference seven times.

The University of Dubuque women's soccer team scored first and held a lead throughout most of the game on Wednesday evening, but needed two overtimes to complete the exciting victory over the Loras College Duhawks at the Rock Bowl by a score of 3-2. The last time the Spartans captured regular season victory over Loras was Oct. 21, 2009 which was also the Duhawks last regular season IIAC loss. The series since 2009 has provided three, double overtimes games. In 2009, the Spartans won the IIAC Tournament and advanced into the NCAA Division III National Championships.

The University of Dubuque women's soccer team ranked #7 in North Region earned their 10th victory of the season and the 199th win for coach Jason Berna at UD. The Spartans jumped out to an early halftime lead 3-0 off goals by Megan Siepler (16:24), Melissa Sawyer (28:39), and Kyleigh McLaughlin (36:11) off an assist by Melanie Prudhomme. UD stretched it to 5-0 for a final over the Coe College Kohawks after McLaughlin added her second goal of the night at 62:29. Just 10 seconds later the Spartans scored again with Sawyer collecting her second goal of the night off a penalty kick.
