    Turnovers Costly in Spartan Football Opener

    The University of Dubuque football team would like to wake up and start again after their 2014 season opener finished in favor of the UW-La Crosse Eagles 8-24 on Saturday night. The Spartans stumbled early and coughed up the football in their first three possessions in a combined 1:28 of possession. The six Spartans' turnovers were more than they could overcome as the Pioneers spotted the ball inside of the UD 35 yardline in four out of their first five possessions.

    Ortiz earned the Iowa Conference women’s cross country performer of the week after climbing to sixth-place on the all-time University of Dubuque women’s cross country list. Her ascension up the ranks was courtesy of a personal 6k record of 23:54 at the Central Dutch Invitational this past Saturday.

    Men's Soccer Tie UW-Whitewater in 2 OT's

    The University of Dubuque men's soccer battled back from a 0-2 deficit on Wednesday night in the first half of action to knot the game at 2-2 in the second half against the host UW-Whitewater Warhawks in a windy and slight rainy evening in Wisconsin. The two teams fought through two overtimes as the Spartans goal keeper Riley Jensen stoppped all four shot on goal attempts in the final 20 minutes of the pair of overtimes. Jensen played all 110 minutes in goal and collected 10 saves on the road.

    Berna Achieving Success with Spartans #22-ranked Soccer Team

    The University of Dubuque women’s soccer team achieved a level of success Head Coach Jason Berna has been striving for since he started the varsity program for the Spartans in 2001. Wednesday morning the Spartans earned their first ever, national ranking in Division III when the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) released their Sept. 9 poll with the Spartans ranked #22 nationally. UD also earned their highest regional ranking with a #2 ranking in the North Region.

    Martinez Remains Perfect at #1 Singles

    The University of Dubuque women's tennis team dropped an Iowa Conference dual to Wartburg College 1-8 on Wednesday afternoon on Frank Farber Tennis Courts. Freshman Arantxa Martinez improved her #1 singles record to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in league play with a victory over the Knights Katherine Ross by a score of 6-3, 6-0.

    The University of Dubuque volleyball team finished Friday with a 2-0 record at the Jim Coleman Memorial Volleyball Tournament hosted by Aurora University. The Spartans swept North Central and North Park 3-0 in back-to-back matches.

    The University of Dubuque women's golf team is in eighth place after the first day of the Viterbo Invite with a round of 400. Spartans will finish up the tournament on Sunday at the La Crosse Country Club.

    Men's Cross Country Place 5th at 53rd Les Duke

    The University of Dubuque men's cross country team placed fifth overall among the 13 teams competing at the 53rd Les Duke Invitational 8K race on Saturday. The Spartans were paced by freshman Alec Bass, who finished just outside the Top-10, in 13th place in 26:39. Payton Nevills sandwiched between two Spartan freshmen was 20th overall in 27:05 as teammate Jack Lindsay crossed the finish line in 27:40.

    The University of Dubuque's Fabiola Ortiz finished just a minute out of first place for the Spartan women's cross country team at the 53rd Les Duke Invitational hosted by Grinnell College. Ortiz, a freshman, finished the 6K race in 6th place overall in a time 23:07.

    The University of Dubuque men's golf team battled through rain and wind in their final round of play on Monday at the Clarke University Fall Classic held at Thunder Hills C.C. in Peosta. The Spartans finished 3rd out of 12 teams after trailing for the lead by two strokes the opening round 9 (309-311=620).

    The University of Dubuque men' soccer team and the UW-Platteville Pioneers played a balanced match on Wednesday evening with both teams seeing quality shots on goal. Through 86 minutes it appeared as though the contest might be headed for overtime, knotted at 0-0, before the Pioneers Mbodje Sarr took advantage of the ball bouncing off a Spartan defender.

    Spartans Host IIAC Women's Golf

    The 2014 Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) Women's Golf Championship begins this weekend, September 26-27, with the first 36 holes of the 72-hole Championship. This weekend's rounds will be played at Pheasant Ridge Golf Club in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The final 36 holes will be played October 3-4 at Dubuque Golf and Country Club in Dubuque. Play will begin at 10:00 a.m. on September 26 and at 9:00 a.m. on September 27. University of Dubuque is the host of the 2014 Women's Golf Championship.
