    The University of Dubuque wrestling team returned to action in 2015 by competing in the competitive University of Chicago Duals on Saturday. The Spartans lost the opening dual to St. John's 21-30, beat Harper in the second round 27-15, and capped off the busy afternoon with a narrow defeat to #2-ranked Wabash 15-24. Senior captain Nic Rivera at 133 lbs. completed the afternoon with a perfect 3-0 record as freshman teammate Dominic Sterr finished 2-0 at 197 lbs.

    Spartan senior and team captain, Nicholas Rivera, finished a perfect 3-0 by the combined score of 32-8 at the University of Chicago Duals last Saturday to earn the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) Wrestler of the Week award.

    Norris Leads Spartans in IIAC Season Opener

    The University of Dubuque conference season opener started a bit slow for the Spartans as the visiting Central College Dutch jumped out to a 12 point lead in the opening five minutes of action. The Spartans would rally back to capture a halftime 35-32 lead. The Spartans stretched out their lead to 16 points as time wound down for the 79-63 victory on Jon Davison Court in Stoltz Sports Center.

    Joseph Shue led the Spartans at the Flanagan Open with a sixth place finish at 184 lbs. as 149 competitors battled in the open. Schools competing included University of Dubuque, Loras College, UW-Oshkosh, Northwestern University, Purdue University, Northern Illinois University, University of Wisconsin, Upper Iowa University, UW-Platteville, University of Northern Iowa, University of Iowa and Triton.

    Men's Basketball Capture Game at Free Throw Line

    The University of Dubuque men's basketball team sank 5-6 free throws in the final 33 seconds to capture a hard fought Iowa Conference road victory over the Luther College Norse 68-65. Andre Norris became the 23rd Spartan to eclipse the 1000-point career mark (1,025 points) after he led the Spartans with a game high 31 points and 11 rebounds. It was the second time Norris has scored over 30 points in 2014-15.

    The University of Dubuque wrestling team captured a dual meet win over Wheaton College 36-12, but lost to UW-La Crosse 3-30 on Saturday. Freshman Joey Cisneros was the lone Spartan to finish 2-0 after collecting a slim 5-4 decision over Ryan Weinmann of UW-L and won by a 10-4 decision over Carlos Fuentez of Wheaton.

    The University of Dubuque men's basketball team led by a point at halftime 46-45, but would be out scored in the final 20 minutes 40-32 as they dropped a road conference contest on Saturday afternoon to the Buena Vista University Beavers 78-85. The Beavers finished with four out of five starers in double digit scoring despite the Spartans holding the lead for 21:07.

    The University of Dubuque men's basketball team bounced back after Saturday's road loss on Wednesday evening by defeating Loras College 67-55 on Jon Davison Court in Stoltz Sports Center. Mediacom taped the game for replay the last week of January for the fans in Dubuque. UD will host the 100th anniversary of McCormick Gymnasium on Saturday when the Spartans host the Simpson College Storm.

    The University of Dubuque wrestling team left no dispute about the victor in Thursday night's dual meet at UW-Platteville. The match began at 141 lbs. and the Spartans Stephen Rosenburg opened the meet with a 12-2 major decision. The Pioneers wrestled well, but it was a total Spartan domination as they rolled off 10 consecutive wins to capture the meet 41-0.

    The Iowa Conference are hosting team duals in two locations on Saturday. The Spartans travel to #1-ranked Wartburg and will wrestle Central College at 10:00 a.m., Buena Vista at 12:00 p.m. and finish with the hosts Wartburg College at 2:00 p.m. In Indianola, Simpson College host Coe College, Luther College, and Loras College.

Thursday night the #30-ranked Spartans (7-10 overall in dual meets) faced the #16-ranked Luther College Norse (10-6 in dual meets) and came up short 9-30. Freshman Joey Cisneros gave the Spartans a 3-0 lead after winning the 125 lbs. match in overtime 5-3. Elton Turnage-Manuel battled to a 3-2 victory at 174 lbs. and Dominic Sterr earned the 3-2 decision at 197 lbs.

    The #30-ranked University of Dubuque dropped just one match on Friday night en route to a 36-3 victory over the Simpson College Storm in Stoltz Sports Center. Nicholas Rivera captured a fall as time was expiring in the first period of the 133 lbs. match in 2:48. Kody Krenz won by fall in the 149 lbs. weight class in 4:31.

    Men's Basketball Stops Duhawks Offense

    The University of Dubuque men's basketball team led for 33:38 of the 40 minutes on Saturday and dominated the Iowa Conference match-up over the Loras College Duhawks 83-57. The Spartans led by 17 points at halftime and extended that lead to 27 points in the second half to improve to 15-4 overall and 6-3 in the IIAC and moved to within two games of the conference lead.
