INDIANOLA, IOWA – The University of Dubuque Women’s Basketball teams run towards an Iowa Conference Tournament Championship came to an end on Sunday night with a 79-68 loss at #12 Simpson College (25-2). Senior Mollie Whiting (Woodstock, Ill./Woodstock) set school records for points in a season (667) and points in a career (1737). As a team, UD also set a new school record with 340 steals. UD finishes the 2012-13 season with a 20-8 record. The Spartans must now wait until Monday afternoon to find out if they were selected for an at-large bid into the NCAA DIII Tournament.

Whiting led the Spartans with 37 points, six rebounds, and three assists in 34 minutes of action. The senior guard finished the IIAC Tournament with 99 points scored in three games.  She extended her streak of 20+ point games to 18 games and has scored 15 or more points in 22 straight contests. She has scored at least 15 points in 25 of 28 games this season.

The Spartans jumped out to an early 5-0 lead on the Storm before Simpson went on a 14-2 run to take control of the game. Meggie Schmidt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) would make a three-pointer with 12:17 remaining to get the Spartans within two at 14-12 but UD would not get any closer after the basket.  Schmidt finished the game with 10 points, three assists, three steals, and two blocks off the bench.

UD finished with a 32-18 advantage in points in the paint.

Jennifer Fischer (Deerfield, Wis./Deerfield) finished with seven points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals.

In what could be considered the greatest season in UD Women’s Basketball history, the Spartans set 13 school records. Team records include most wins (20), points in a season (1950), field goals attempted (1770), steals (340), consecutive wins (9), best start to a season (10-1), three-pointers made in a game (15 vs. Wartburg on 2/22/13), and games played (28). The 2012-13 Spartans also became the first UD women’s basketball team to make the finals of the IIAC Tournament. Whiting set five school records including career field goals made (669), career points (1,737), points in season (667), free throws made in a game (16 vs. Simpson on 2/13/13), and free throws attempted in a game (18 vs. Simpson on 2/13/13).

Within the Iowa Conference, Whited led the league with 262 field goals made while also averaging a league high 23.8 points per game. On the defensive end of the court, UD led the IIAC with 127 blocked shots and held their opponents to a league low .282 three-point goal percentage. Whiting finishes the year second in all of Division III at 23.8 points per game and leads all of DIII with 262 field goals made.
