CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today its major women's basketball awards and All-Conference team for the 2012-13 season. Simpson College senior forward Kate Nielsen has been named the league's Most Valuable Player. Nicole Crisp of Simpson and Katie Langmeier of Loras were named Co-Defensive Players of the Year. Simpson Head Coach Brian Niemuth was named Coach of the Year for the seventh time.
University of Dubuque senior Mollie Whiting (Woodstock, Ill./Woodstock) was named First Team All-Iowa Conference for the second straight year. The IIAC Scoring Champion at 23.8 points per game (27.0 in IIAC) finished the season by scoring 20 or more points in 18 straight games. Whiting finished her senior campaign by leading Division III in points (667) and field goals made (262) while finishing second in points per game (23.8). Whiting scored a career high 41 points versus Luther in the First Round of the Iowa Conference Tournament, an IIAC Tournament Record and the fifth highest single game point total in NCAA DIII this season. Whiting finished the tournament with 99 points in three games played.
Whiting scored 15 or more points in 22 straight games and 25 of 28 games this season. She led the Spartans in points (667), assists (65), minutes (849), field goals made (262), field goals attempted (530), free throws made (108), and free throws attempted (139). She set UD single season records for points scored and games played. She leaves UD as the career leader in points (1,737) and field goals made (669). Whiting was named IIAC Women’s Basketball Performer of the Week three times and was named to the D3hoops.com Week 13 Team of the Week.
Spartans sophomore Meggie Schmidt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) was named Honorable Mention All-Iowa Conference. Schmidt sparked the UD second unit with 9.3 points per game and 54 steals. Schmidt was at her best in IIAC action with 11.4 ppg (8th in IIAC only games), 29 steals (4th in IIAC only games), and 23 three-pointers made (3rd in IIAC only games). Her 54 steals on the season was the fourth highest single season total in UD history. Schmidt was also named Honorable Mention All-IIAC during the 2012 Volleyball season.
As a team, UD lead the IIAC in blocks (127) and three-point field goal percentage defense (28.2%). The Spartans also finished second in the league in scoring offense (69.6 ppg), scoring margin (+9.1), steals (240), and turnover margin (+4.39). Dubuque finished second in the Iowa Conference with an average home attendance of 566 per game.
The 2012-13 Spartans set school records for wins (20), points in a season (1950), field goals attempted (1770), steals (340), consecutive wins (9), best start to a season (10-1), three-pointers in a game (15 vs. Wartburg on 2/22/13), and games played (28). UD also made its first appearance in the IIAC Tournament Championship Game.
Whiting and Schmidt finished the year as the top scoring duo in the Iowa Conference with 928 points and an average of 33.1 points per game.
