Spartans Split with Coe

Jordan Gawronski: 5-8 with 2-doubles and 3-runs scored in doubleheader.

DUBUQUE, IOWA – The University of Dubuque Baseball team earned its first Iowa Conference (IIAC) win of the 2013 season against Coe College (7-5, 3-1) on Monday afternoon. After dropping the opening game by a score of 6-4, UD bounced back with a convincing 12-1 win in Game 2. Dubuque pounded out a season high 14 hits in the second game and outhit Coe in the opener. The Spartans are now 3-9 overall and 1-3 in the IIAC.

Game 1: UD-4, Coe-6 BOX SCORE
UD finished the game with an 11-8 advantage in hits but were unable to get the timely hitting needed to win the game.Andrew Danna (Antioch, Ill./Antioch), Jordan Gawronski (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago), Chris Briggs (Lombard, Ill./Montini), and Michael Campbell (Clinton, Mo./Clinton) each accounted for two hits. All 11 hits for the Spartans were singles.

After two Coe runs in the top of the first inning, Dubuque responded with a run of their own on a two out single to left field from Briggs to score Gawronski. UD would once again get on the scoreboard in the third inning after Danna and Gawronski each singled to start the frame. Danna would eventually score on a fielders choice from Spencer Kuehn (Dana Point, Calif./Dana HIlls) that cut the Kohawk lead to 6-2.

UD would once again score in the fifth inning with five straight hitters reaching base with two outs. Briggs and Campbell started the rally with singles to right field. With runners on first and second, Noah Mahlik (Green Bay, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) reached on a throwing error by the Coe shortstop which also allowed Briggs to score from second. Nick Martin(Orland Hills, Ill./Andrew) would then single to load the bases for Vince Parisi (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew). With the bases loaded, Parisi would single to left center scoring Campbell and cutting the Kohawk lead to 6-4. Dubuque was unable to score in the seventh.

Spencer Kuehn took the loss for UD. Kuehn struck out five in five innings pitched. Max Nank (Waterloo, Iowa/Waterloo West) pitched two scoreless innings of relief.

Dubuque did not commit an error in the game.

Game 2: UD-12, Coe-1 BOX SCORE
The Spartan bats came alive in the second game as they scored 12 runs on 14 hits in route to forcing the 10-Run Rule in the eighth inning. Gawronski and Parisi each finished with three hits. Gawronski had two doubles and two runs scored while Parisi had a double and four RBI.

Nick Martin earned the win on the mound. In his last two appearances, Martin has pitched two complete games throwing 15 innings and striking out 11 batters. He also has allowed only two earned runs and nine hits during the span.

After a slow start that saw UD go scoreless over the first three innings, the Spartans responded with two runs in the fourth, three in the fifth, three in the sixth and four in the eighth.

The scoring for Dubuque in the fourth came on a Parisi double to left center that scored Campbell and Michael Riordan(Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central). In the fifth, Gawronski started the inning with a double; moved to third on a fly ball to right field and scored on a wild pitch to put UD ahead 3-1. Briggs would be the next Spartan to score after reaching on walk, stealing second base, and scoring on triple from Campbell. The final run of the fifth came on a single from Riordan that scored Aaron Laskowski (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton).

Scoring in the sixth inning began when Danna singled to centerfield to drive in Kyle Duggan (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Linn-Mar). Danna would later score on an RBI single to right center from Briggs. The third run of the inning came when Kuehn scored on a throwing error by the Coe pitcher.

A pitching change by Coe in the eighth gave UD the confidence needed to close out the game early. Pinch hitter Austin Monfross (Big Timber, Mont./Sweet Grass) hit an RBI single and scored the final run of the game.  The game ended with a two run single down the right field line by Parisi.
