WAVERLY, IOWA – The University of Dubuque Baseball team handed Wartburg just its second home loss of the season in Game 2 of the Saturday doubleheader. The Spartans scored three runs in the second inning and did not look back as they went on to win 8-4. Dubuque lost the opener 12-4. UD is now 9-21 overall and 7-15 in the Iowa Conference. The Spartans are two games out of sixth place and three games out of third place in the highly competitive IIAC.
Game 1: UD-4, Wartburg-12 BOX SCORE
The Spartans jumped out to an early two run lead in the top of the first inning on a Chris Briggs (Lombard, Ill./Montini) home run to center field. Unfortunately Wartburg responded with six in the bottom of the first and four more in the second to take a 10-2 lead after two innings.
UD once again used the long ball to get on the scoreboard in the third with Andrew Danna (Antioch, Ill./Antioch) hitting a home run to right field. Also scoring on the play was Aaron Laskowski (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) who singled to lead off the inning.
Briggs and Laskowski each finished the game 2-3 to lead UD at the plate.
Max Nank (Waterloo, Iowa/Waterloo West) took the loss for UD. Lucas Ware (Platteville, Wis./Platteville) pitched three innings of relief, allowing only one run and striking out three.
Game 2: UD-8, Wartburg-4 BOX SCORE
Needing a win to avoid the four game sweep, UD turned the ball over to Josh Eastman (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton). Eastman threw all nine innings, scattering eight hits and allowed four runs. Eastman picked up his second consecutive win and has a team leading 1.81 ERA. Eastman retired 11 straight hitters to end the game.
Danna, Vince Parisi (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew), and Michael Riordan (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) all had two hits in the game with Danna and Riordan scoring twice also.
The Spartans started the scoring in game two with a RBI single by Riordan in the second inning to score Austin Monfross (Big Timber, Mont./Sweet Grass). Brock Grubbs (Bondurant, Iowa/Bondurant-Farrar) followed with RBI double to bring in Parisi. Riordan would score the third run of the frame on a RBI groundout by Laskowski. Wartburg answered with one run in the bottom of the second.
The fifth inning would see UD score two runs on three hits. Laskowski started things with a one out bunt single before scoring from first on a double to right center from Danna. Danna would advance to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a single by Nick Martin (Orland Hills, Ill./Andrew). Wartburg scored three of their own in the fifth to cut the UD lead to 5-4.
UD would add two insurance runs in the eighth and another in the ninth to hold on for a 8-4 victory.
Danna, Monfross, Riordan, and Grubbs all hit doubles.
Dubuque did not commit an error in the game.
