DUBUQUE, IOWA – The University of Dubuque Men’s Basketball team and coaching staff spent its Thursday afternoon helping the city of Dubuque clean-up the historic Port of Dubuque area. The 2013 Iowa Conference Tournament Champion Spartans spent the afternoon pulling weeds and laying mulch near the National Mississippi River Museum. In addition, UD spent ten days in Costa Rica in May as they learned about the Costa Rican culture and spent time in elementary classrooms.
“It is always nice to help out an organization here in Dubuque and this year we were able to provide a helping hand to the City of Dubuque,” said Head Men’s Basketball Coach Robbie Sieverding.
The Spartans will be looking to build on a season in which they set a school record with 22 wins and captured the programs first Iowa Conference Tournament Championship. UD returns three All-Iowa Conference performers in Chris Frazier (First Team, Guard), Mitch Michaelis (Second Team, Forward), and Andre Norris (Second Team, Forward).
"It was great to to be able to go out and give back to the community," said junior Lucas Ware (Platteville, Wis./Platteville). "It was a good opportunity to get to know the new guys on the team as well."
UD opens the season on Friday, November 1st in an exhibition game at the University of Northern Iowa.
Senior Chris Frazier added, "I enjoyed working as a team to make the community and the Port of Dubuque area look a good as it now does. It looked like easy work at first but there ended up being a good amount of work that had to be done."
