CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA – The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Central basketball player Kenzie Vander Molen and Wartburg wrestler Landon Williams have been named IIAC Athletes of the Week for the week ending January 12, 2014. The Conference also announced Performers of the Week in seven winter sports.
University of Dubuque sophomore Andre Norris (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) was named IIAC Men’s Basketball Performer of the Week for the third time this season. Norris averaged 22.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game as UD improved to 13-0 on year and 2-0 in the Iowa Conference. The Spartans are one of seven undefeated teams remaining in Division-III and 1 of 18 in the NCAA All-Divisions.
The Spartans forward started the week with a game high 25 points on 9-14 shooting in the rematch of the IIAC Tournament Championship Game versus Wartburg. After a slow start at Central, Norris exploded for 17 points, eight rebounds, and four assists in the second half as UD rallied from a nine point deficit. He finished with 19 points, nine rebounds, and five assists against Central.
At the midway point of the season, Norris is currently second in the IIAC at 17.5 points per game, fourth with 14 blocks, and 12th at 5.3 rebounds per game. He is also third in the conference with a 62.5% (85-136) field goal percentage. His 85 field goals made rank second in the league. As a team, UD leads the Iowa Conference in scoring offense (85.0 points/game), scoring margin (+13.6 points/game), turnover margin (+3.31), free throws made (289), free throw percentage (72.4%), and three-point field goal percentage (39.6%).
Norris was previously honored as Iowa Conference Performer of the Week on November 17th (Week 1) and December 22nd (Week 6). Norris is the first Spartan to earn the award three times in a season since Taylor Blum won it three times during the 2009-10 Season.
