Spartans Prepare for NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The University of Dubuque wrestling team is anxious to begin the 2014 NCAA Division III National Championships this weekend at the NCAA National Championships at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids on March 14-15.

The Spartans qualified four wrestlers for the championships: Nicholas Rivera (Jr. Mesa, Ariz./Red Mountain) 18-16 overall will face the #3-seed Lucas Maimberg of Messiah who enters with a 43-3 overall mark in the 125 lbs. weight class. At 141 lbs., the Spartans Brian Travis (Jr., St. Petersburg, Fla./Northside Christian.) 19-7 overall will wrestle a pigtail match against Nathaniel Behnke 35-9 overall record. The winner of the match will face off against the #2 seed Brandon Jones of New York University 21-2 overall. Regional champion, Nick Drendel (Fr., North Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) 20-6 overall will meet the #7 seed Vincent Fava 26-4 overall  in his opening match at 149 lbs. UD's Derek Mizaur (Sr., Sherrard, Ill./Sherrard) is the #7 seed at 165 lbs. and will wrestle Stephen Aiello of Wheaton in his opening round.
