Spartans Beat UW-Platteville

Daniel Casanova: Went 3-4 with a double, two runs, and three stolen bases against UW-Platteville.

FORT MYERS, FLORIDA - The campuses of the University of Dubuque and UW-Platteville are separated by just 23 miles, today they played a baseball game nearly 1,500 miles from home at the Gene Cusic Classic. The Spartans broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the seventh on a two-run triple by Vince Parisi (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew). Daniel Casanova (Lake Tapps, Wash./Auburn Riverside) led UD offensively by going 3-4 with a double, two runs scored, and three stolen bases. Dubuque improves to 3-5 overall and 2-2 on the spring trip.

The Spartans used timely hitting and pressure on the base paths on Tuesday morning to defeat UW-P. The pressure on the bases began early with Casanova stealing two bases in the first inning. After reaching on a fielders choice, Gaetano Florio (Youngtown, Ariz./Willow Canyon) stole second. Casanova then reached on a infield single to put runners on first and second. With two outs, the Spartans executed a double steal that resulted in overthrow allowing Florio to score from third and Casanova to score from second.

UW-Platteville answered with two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead and chase starter Trent Van Egtern (La Crosse, Wis./Central) in the sixth with the score tied at 3-3. Van Egtern would get a no-decision going 5 1/3 innings with seven hits and three earned runs allowed. Casanova was once again in the middle of the UD scoring leading off the sixth with a double to left center. A sac bunt moved him to third before Steve Ryan (Loveland, Colo./Mountain View) doubled down the left field line to tie the game at 3-3. 

One out walks by Michael Riordan (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) and Noah Burdt (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington) set the stage for Parisi's two run triple to right field. Entering the game after a double in the sixth, relief pitcher Dalton Garst (Winnebago, Ill./Winnebago) pitched 3 2/3 innings of scoreless ball. Garst struck out two and allowed one hit to earn his first collegiate win. 

UP NEXT: The Spartans return to the diamond against SUNY-Plattsburg on Wednesday, March 19th. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 am CT.
