DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque Spartans football team playing in front of a large homecoming crowd on Saturday would give the fans plenty of excitement to watch. The Spartans led by eight points with under two minutes remaining in the game, the visiting Coe College Kohawks marched the ball down the field in 1:11 to score on a Gage Mohs five yard rush with :48 seconds remaining with score in favor of UD 28-26. Coe went for the two point conversion and successfully completed a Jared McNutt pass to Chase Colling to knot the game 28-28. The game would end in a 28-28 tie.
In the first overtime, UD won the coin toss and elected to play defense first. Coe used six plays to score on a Brendan Leiran rush, after an extra point Coe led by seven points. UD responded with two plays and scored on a 25 yard pass from Wyatt Hanus to Miles Hookstead for the tie to end first OT 35-35. In second overtime, UD had the ball first and were stopped in fourth and 10 yards to go. UD opted to kick a 42 yard field goal by Heriberto Sandoval for the go ahead score 38-35. Th Kohawks scored on their fourth play of the drive on a McNutt touchdown pass to Jared Kuehner from 13 yards for the game winner in the second overtime, by a 41-38 final.
The team stats were about as equal as the game with Coe finishing with 440 yards of offense as the Spartans had 393 total yards. Coe's McNutt passed for 260 yards and UD's Hanus finished with 225 passing yards. The Spartans Kyle Acker led the ground attack with 143 yards in 31 carries. UD held Coe's Leiran to 54 rushing yards in 24 carries. UD's wide receiver Sean Anderson caught seven passes for 112 yards and two touchdowns in the loss.
Trevor Runkle led the Spartans defense with three solos and eight assisted tackles. Marice Hill finished with six solos and four assisted tackles including two tackles for losses of five yards. In special teams, Sandoval was perfect on the afternoon in five extra point tries and was 1-1 in field goals with his overtime 42 yard field goal.
UD will travel to face the Wartburg College Knights next Saturday with kick-off slated for 1:30 p.m. in Waverly.
