Ashley Barwick: Academic All-America

DUBUQUE, IOWA - University of Dubuque Women’s Soccer student-athlete Ashley Barwick (Appleton, Wis./Xavier) has been named 2012 Division III First Team Capital One Academic All-America, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). She is the first Women’s Soccer player in UD history to earn the honor.

During the 2012 season Barwick scored one goal while defending the opposition’s biggest offensive threat on the defensive side of the field. The Spartans defense set a school record by going 524 minutes without allowing a goal. Behind the strong defense, UD broke the school record for consecutive wins with six. She was recently named First Team All-Iowa Conference defender for the second straight season.

An accounting and business administration major, Barwick owns a cumulative GPA of 4.00. She has been named to the Dean’s List six times, is a Wendt Character Scholarship winner, Presidential Scholar, and is the editor of the Belltower. Barwick will also be participating in Basketball and Track & Field this winter.

Barwick has been the lead defender for the past three seasons and is a four year starter for the Spartans. She ranks ninth all-time at UD with 67 games started. In her four years at UD the defense has produced 27 shutouts. The senior defender has scored five goals and assisted on two others in 67 games played. Dubuque qualified for the Iowa Conference Tournament in each of the last four years, winning the title in 2009.

A 2011 and 2012 First Team Academic All-District performer, Barwick has been named Academic All-Iowa Conference in 2010, 2011, and 2012 for Women’s Soccer in addition to Women’s Basketball in 2010 and 2011. The Spartans earned the NSCAA Team Academic Award all four years Barwick was on the team.
