UD Athletics - Home of the Spartans


The Athletic Trainers at University of Dubuque are here to provide student-athletes with an opportunity to participate in intercollegiate athletics in the safest and healthiest manner possible. Our goals are to help prevent athletic injuries from occurring and recognizing that some injuries are inevitable, render first aid, provide follow-up treatment and rehabilitation.

The staff is also here to educate and inform the student athlete as well as their parent on the particular injury or illness.

We are also here to return the student-athlete to participation as soon as it is medically safe.


Certified Athletic Trainers
University of Dubuque Certified Athletic Trainers are Certified by the National Accrediting Organization of the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATABOC) as well as Licensed by the State of Iowa. 

Student Athletic Trainers
The University of Dubuque is fortunate to have a wonderful working relationship with the Clarke College (http://www.clarke.edu/department.aspx?id=2468) Athletic Training Curriculum. The student athletic trainers are able to gain valuable clinical experience through sport rotations at UD.

Team Physicians and Health Service
The University of Dubuque Team Physicians:
Dr. Judson Ott, Orthopaedic Traumatology/Sports Medicine and Dr. Steve Rock, Orthopedic Surgery/Sports Medicine

Dr Ott and Dr Rock are Board Certified Physicians employed by Medical Associates in Dubuque. (http://mahealthcare.com/musculo.htm/)

Dr Ott has a medical degree from University Iowa and was Board Certified in Orthopedic Surgery in 1995. He joined the clinic in September 1993 and has been providing medical services for University of Dubuque.

Dr Rock recently joined with Dr Ott in providing quality medical care for the University of Dubuque athletes. He received his medical degree from Tulane Medical School and did his Residency at University of Wisconsin and located to Dubuque in Aug 2001. He belongs to various professional affiliations and is an avid runner.

They provide medical coverage in the UD Athletic Training Room as well as at designated events.

Debra R. Runkle, MA, ATC/L

Thesis: "The Effects of Full Hip-Flexion and 45-Degree Straight Leg Raising Exercises on Retropatellar Pain."

Debra earned her bachelor of science in physical education from South DakotaStateUniversity (Brookings, SD), and her master of arts in physical education from MankatoStateUniversity (Mankato, MN) with an emphasis on sports medicine.

A certified athletic trainer since 1979, she has traveled internationally as a member of the United States Olympic Training Center (USOC).As a medical staff member for the USOC she has traveled with Team USA to the 2000 Olympics in Sidney, Australia, 1999 Pan American Games in Winnipeg, Canada, 1998 World Youth Games in Moscow, Russia, and the 1996 Paralympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia.Additionally, she served as athletic trainer with the USA Wheelchair Team and Cerebral Palsy Teams.In 1982 she received the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) Outstanding Research and Injury Award.

Previously, she was an Assistant Professor and Athletic Trainer at MinnesotaStateUniversity, Mankato.She taught various classes with the Human Performance Department and in the nationally known accredited Athletic Training program for 17 years. Prior to MSU, M she was employed as instructor and athletic trainer at Chadron State College, and was a teacher, coach and athletic trainer in the Dell Rapids School District, in Dell Rapids, South Dakota for 3 years after graduating from SDSU.

Deb is a member of several professional organizations, including the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA), Wheelchair Sports USA, College Athletic Trainers Society, National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), and the American Alliance of Health, Physical Education and Recreation (AAHPER).She is co-author of the college textbook Athletic Protective Equipment Care, Selection and Fitting and has published articles on eating disorders and athletic training topics. In 2002 & 2003, she was a finalist for the National Athletic Trainers Association Gail Weldon Woman Athletic Trainer Award . She is presently a member of the NCAA Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports.

Erin Barsema joined the University of Dubuque as an Administrative Assistant to the University Medical Coordinator and Assistant Athletic Trainer in 2008. Barsema is a 2008 graduate of Clarke University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training.

In addition, Barsema is a Clinical Faculty member for the Clarke University Athletic Training Education Program and is a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) as well as the Mid-America Athletic Trainers' Association (MAATA) and the Iowa Athletic Trainers Society.

The Pittsville, WI native currently resides in Dubuque, IA with husband Mike Barsema (Full-time Flight Instructor at the University of Dubuque) son Chase (2), and is expecting another in January 2012.

Sarah Accacian

Sarah (Fahrenkrug) Accacian joined the Spartans Athletic Training staff in August 2010. Accacian is a 2005 graduate of Clarke University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training and a minor in biology.

From 2005-2006 Accacian served as an Adjunct Athletic Trainer and Approved Clinical Instructor for Clarke covering Women's Soccer, Men's Volleyball, and Softball.

Sarah continued her education at Illinois State University, graduating in 2008 with a Master of Science degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Athletic Training. While in graduate school, Accacian served as a graduate assistant for Illinois Wesleyan University. Her primary responsibilities were Men's Soccer and Women's Basketball, while assisting with Cross Country and Tennis.

In Fall 2008, Sarah joined the sports medicine staff at Cazenovia College (Cazenovia, NY) as an Assistant Athletic Trainer. From 2008 to 2010, Accacian assisted with the medical care of all Wildcat athletes.

In addition, Sarah is a Clinical Faculty member for the Clarke University Athletic Training Education Program and is a member of the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) as well as the Mid-America Athletic Trainers Association (MAATA) and the Iowa Athletic Trainers Society (IATS).

The DeWitt, Iowa native currently resides in Dubuque, Iowa, with her husband, Andy and dog, Lola.

Andrew Accacian

Andrew Accacian joined the Spartans Athletic Training staff in August 2010. Accacian is a 2008 graduate of Clarke College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training and minors in biology and history.

Accacian continued his education at Syracuse University, graduating in 2010 with a Master of Science degree in Exercise Science. While at Syracuse, his primary responsibility was Football, but assisted with the healthcare of all other sports.

Accacian is also an instructor with the American Red Cross.

In addition, Accacian is a Clinical Faculty member for the Clarke University Athletic Training Education Program and is a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) as well as the Mid-America Athletic Trainers Association (MAATA) and the Iowa Athletic Trainers Society.

The Oakland, Calif. native currently resides in Dubuque, Iowa with his wife, Sarah and dog, Lola.

Elizabeth Mattson

Elizabeth Mattson joined the Spartans Athletic Training staff in August 2011. Mattson is a 2009 graduate of University of Wisconsin- Stevens Point with a Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training and a minor in nutrition.

During the summer of 2008 and 2009, Mattson had an internship with the Wisconsin Woodchucks in Wausau, Wis., a collegiate wooden bat league. She continued her education at Illinois State University, graduating in 2011 with a Master of Science degree in Athletic Training. While at Illinois State, she handled all aspects of healthcare for Women's Gymnastics.

Mattson is also a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and an instructor with the American Red Cross.

In addition, Mattson is a Clinical Faculty member for the Clarke University Athletic Training Education Program and is a member of the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA), Mid-America Athletic Trainers Association (MAATA), Iowa Athletic Trainers Society, as well as the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).

The New Hope, Minn. native currently resides in Dubuque, Iowa.

Erin Bierstedt joined the Spartans Athletic Training staff in August 2011. Bierstedt is a 2008 graduate of Minnesota State University-Mankato with a Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training.

Bierstedt continued her education at Illinois State University, graduating in 2011 with a Master of Science degree in Athletic Training. Bierstedt worked with Illinois Wesleyan University athletics during grad school with her primary responsibilities being Women's Soccer and Women's Basketball, while assisting with coverage of Tennis, Cross Country, and Golf.
