Dan Runkle joined the University of the Dubuque in August of 2002. "Runk" came to the University of
Dubuque after a 21-year career as Head Football and Assistant Professor at Minnesota State University, Mankato, MN. He is the all-time winningest football coach at MSU, along with being the 14th winningest coach in NCAA Division II. Some of his accomplishments and accolades include: 1987 North Central Conference Coach of the Year, 1991 Football Gazzette Division II National Coach of the Year, and in 1993 he was inducted into the Illinois College Hall of Fame. During his tenure at MSU, Runkle worked with his student athletes to help them achieve a team GPA of 3.0 and to have a graduation rate of 93%. Debra R. Debra earned her bachelor of science in physical education from South DakotaStateUniversity (Brookings, SD), and her master of arts in physical education from MankatoStateUniversity (Mankato, MN) with an emphasis on sports medicine. A certified athletic trainer since 1979, she has traveled internationally as a member of the United States Olympic Training Center (USOC).As a medical staff member for the USOC she has traveled with Team USA to the 2000 Olympics in Sidney, Australia, 1999 Pan American Games in Winnipeg, Canada, 1998 World Youth Games in Moscow, Russia, and the 1996 Paralympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia.Additionally, she served as athletic trainer with the USA Wheelchair Team and Cerebral Palsy Teams.In 1982 she received the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) Outstanding Research and Injury Award. Previously, she was an Assistant Professor and Athletic Trainer at MinnesotaStateUniversity, Mankato.She taught various classes with the Human Performance Department and in the nationally known accredited Athletic Training program for 17 years. Prior to MSU, M she was employed as instructor and athletic trainer at Chadron State College, and was a teacher, coach and athletic trainer in the Dell Rapids School District, in Dell Rapids, South Dakota for 3 years after graduating from SDSU. Deb is a member of several professional organizations, including the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA), Wheelchair Sports USA, College Athletic Trainers Society, National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), and the American Alliance of Health, Physical Education and Recreation (AAHPER).She is co-author of the college textbook Athletic Protective Equipment Care, Selection and Fitting and has published articles on eating disorders and athletic training topics. Head Women's Soccer Coach
Head coach Jason Berna joined the University of Dubuque in 2001. He started the men's and women's soccer programs in 2001 and was both the Mens and Womens Head Soccer coach for eight season before stepping down as the Mens Coach in 2008 to focus all his energy on the womens program. He led the womens team to four straight conference tournament appearances and 6 out of 8 for the programs history. He led the mens team to two straight playoff appearances with his last year ending in the IIAC Championship semi-finals. He was named 2005 IIAC Womens Coach of the year. He has coached on the Women side: 25 All-Iowa Conference athletes, 2 All-Region performers, 1 Conference MVP and several Academic All-Conference student-athletes. He has always pushed his teams to not only do well on the field but in the class room. The womens program has received two team academic awards from the NSCAA in 2006 & 2008 for having above a 3.0 team GPA. Berna graduated from Loras College where he played four years, was a three-time All-Iowa Conference selection, and three-year captain. He also trained and played in 1999 with the Des Menace PDL team for one summer before tearing his ACL for the second time. He was an assistant coach with his alma mater for one season with the mens and womens soccer programs before joining UD. Berna also serves as the Dubuque Soccer Club administrator and as an Iowa Olympic Development State Staff coach for the past five years. Berna holds the highest coaching license offered by the United States Soccer Fedration, an A License as well as his NSCAA Goal Keeping License. He is also a state license instructor teaching the USSF D course on campus so students can obtain their beginning coaching license while attending UD. Berna received a masters degree in Physical Education and Athletic Administration and an undergraduate degree in sports science from Loras College in 2001 and 1999. He and his wife Nicole have two children, Jimmy and Izzie who reside in Dubuque. Jon Davison (C61), who announced last November that he was retiring as Clarkes head basketball and mens golf coach will be returning home to the University of Dubuque.
Davison will be entering his 40th season in the collegiate ranks when he takes over the mens golf program for the Spartans. He will counsel mens basketball and spend time re-connecting with Dubuque Alumni as special projects coordinator for the development office. Davison, a native of Aledo, Ill., has spent 42 years in the coaching and teaching profession. He started his collegiate coaching career at his alma mater in 1966. Davison logged over 300 wins in 27 seasons as head basketball coach at UD. His squads posted an overall won-loss record of 371-320 and had four 20-plus win seasons. During the 1980s, Davisons squads dominated the Iowa Conference, compiling the best won-loss record over that 10-year period. His 1986, 1988, and 1990 squads won the Iowa Conference championship. The Spartans qualified for the NCAA Division III tournament in 1981, 1986, 1988, and 1990. Davison was named Iowa Conference Coach of the Year in basketball in 1986, 1988 and 1990, and in golf in 1975. In 1990, he was awarded the Paul Maaske Award as Iowas Small College Coach of the Year. He coached eight Conference Players of the Year at UD. Davison served as director of athletics, head mens basketball coach (27 years), head golf coach (15 years), head track coach (6 years), head tennis coach (3 years), head cross country coach (10 years), head baseball coach (1 year), assistant football coach (8 years), associate professor of physical education and department chairman (20 years) at UD at various times from 1966 to 1993. Davison lettered in four sports at the UD, where he garnered four letters in both football and track, two in basketball, and one in baseball. After a three-year hiatus from collegiate coaching, Davison joined Clarkes coaching staff in 1996. He guided his 2005-06 squad to a 17-10 mark and its first Northern Illinois - Iowa Conference championship. Clarke finished 11-1 overall in league play. The Crusaders' championship season came on the heels of a 20-7 campaign in 2004-05. Davison guided Clarkes mens golf program to seven straight Northern Illinois - Iowa Conference championships from 1999 to 2005. Davison was named the conference Coach of the Year in 1998-99, 1999-2000, 2001-02, 2002-03 and 2003-04. He was named the 2004-05 NIIC Co-Coach of the Year. Elsbernd is a native of Calmar, Iowa (South Winneshiek High School), and played collegiate volleyball at Coe College from 1999-2002. She was a four-year letterwinner and earned Academic All-Iowa Conference honors in 2001 and 2002. She holds Coe's records for most kills in a match (4 games), career record attempts with 3,506, and solo blocks in a four game match with 7. After graduating from Coe, she spent three seasons as an assistant under Cornell College's Jeff Meeker and one season as an assistant at Western Technical College in La Crosse, Wis.
Most recently she was the head coach at Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge, Iowa. In her first season, she finished with a 15-22 record. "I was really impressed with the University of Dubuque campus, the mission and vision of the college and the city of Dubuque itself," added Elsbernd. "I am familiar with the Iowa Conference, as a former student-athlete and am glad to be part of the IIAC as a head coach. I'm looking forward to the challenges of the strong competition among the IIAC and learning from my colleagues." One of Elsbernd's goals is to go out and be competitive every time they step on the court. She is anxious to begin working with the Spartans and to bring in recruits who will play at the level needed to be successful in the IIAC and in regional play. "The University of Dubuque believes we have hired someone with a love of the sport of volleyball, who has a great enthusiasm for recruiting," added Dan Runkle. "We have taken steps to help us move back among the top of the Iowa Conference and become a successful volleyball program once again." Dana Harrold joined the University of Dubuque coaching staff in 2004 after attending her alma mater from 2000-2004.
The Jesup High School native, prepped at Jesup High School where she had a standout career in several sports. In her senior basketball season at Jesup, she led her team to the first ever girls state tournament berth in the school's history. She holds records for most career/season assists, 2nd most points, and 3rd most steals in a career. Harrold was named all-conference and All-State in both basketball and softball. From 2000-2004 Harrold played point guard for the University of Dubuque, setting the 2nd best record in school history of 14-12 her senior season. She finished her career as the schools second leading scorer, the all-time career assist and steals leader. Harrold was named All-IIAC three seasons and named team MVP and Papa Johns Female Athlete of the Year her junior and senior seasons. Harrold completed her masters in athletic administration through Loras College in 2006. She also holds a physical education and health degree from the University of Dubuque. Matthew Hayes Biography - Click Here
A native of Milwaukee, Wis., Hayes has nine years of NCAA Division III coaching experience in cross country and track and field. He was previously the head men's and women's cross country/track and field coach at Methodist College (Fayetteville, N.C.). Hayes served as a head and assistant cross country coach at Lynchburg College (Lynchburg, Va.) and was an assistant coach at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
At Lynchburg College, Hayes led the women's cross country team to the 2003 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) championship and was named the ODAC Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year. His athletes at Lynchburg set six school records under his leadership. He also coached four NCAA Division III All-Americans at Lynchburg. At Wisconsin-Stevens Point, he coached four NCAA Division III National Champions and seven All-Americans. As a college student-athlete at Stevens Point, Hayes participated in three NCAA Division III National Cross County Meets and six national track meets. He earned All-American Honors in the 4x400 meter relay, 800 meter and 1,500-meter events. He was a eight-time letterwinner at UW-Stevens Point. Still an avid runner, Hayes competes in triathlons and helped organize the first Rodney T. Miller Lakeside Triathlon in July 2007. Brad Johnson joined the University of Dubuque Spartans in 2004 as the Mens and Womens Assistant Soccer Coach. After helping guide both programs to new heights, he was named the Associate Head Mens Soccer Coach in 2008. Following an extremely successful 2008 season, Johnson was promoted to the position of Head Mens Soccer Coach.
Johnson currently holds a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) B License, NSCAA Goalkeeping License, and NSCAA Special Topic License. He is actively involved in the Dubuque Soccer Club and is currently the U-13 to U-18 Director of Coaching. As well, Johnson was previously the Head Boys Soccer Coach at Hempstead High School in Dubuque. He attended Loras College for four years, where he was a three-time captain, four-year All-Iowa Conference honoree, an All-Region selection, and garnered Iowa Conference MVP honors. He holds the records at Loras College for most points and goals scored in a career. Johnson received a masters degree in Business Administration from the University of Dubuque and his Bachelor Degree in Finance from Loras College. Head Wrestling Coach
Jon McGovern joined the Spartans as Head Wrestling Coach for the University of Dubuque in 2002. Prior to joining the staff at the University of Dubuque, McGovern was the head assistant coach at the University of Chicago. His knowledge of the sport was shared around the Chicago area where he volunteered his time running a freestyle wrestling club for high school youth. McGovern spent 2000 year training full time at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. Heplaced 4th in the finals of the 2000 Olympic Trials in Dallas Texas. He was a 1998 US National Team Member and placed third at the 1998 US National Tournament and third at the 1998 World Team Trials. During the 1998-1999 season, he was the assistant head wrestling coach at the University of Pennsylvania where he helped coach the team to a school record 11th place finish in the NCAA Division I National Championships with three NCAA All-Americans and one NCAA Division I National Champion. In 1997-1998, he was the head assistant coach at the University of Virginia and helped coach the squad which set a school record of seven NCAA Division I National Qualifiers and a second place finish in the Athletic Coast Conference Championships.

Bryan Mours Biography - Click Here
Bryan Mours was selected to lead the University of Dubuques mens and womens tennis programs in January 2009.
Mours is a Wisconsin Rapids, Wis. native and attended Wisconsin Rapids Assumption High School. During his collegiate career, he played for two seasons at the University of Northern Iowa and is a 2000 UNI graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Secondary Education Social Science, with an emphasis in United States History, Geography, and Psychology. His tennis teaching career began in 1994 when he began his affiliation with Bulls Eye Country Club in Wisconsin Rapids, WI. Mours served as the Head Tennis Professional at the club until 1997. From 2003 to 2004 he was served as Head Tennis Instructor of the Pleasant Hill Parks and Recreation Department in Pleasant Hill, IA. In 2006, Mours served as the tournament director for the United States Tennis Association Pella Junior Open. His coaching career began in 2000 when he piloted the Wolverines of Dike-New Hartford for one season. In 2003, Mours took the reigns of the boys tennis program at Pella High School. During his tenure at Pella High, Mours had nine state tournament qualifiers in five seasons, with four top-four individual finishes for four consecutive seasons and his 2004 Dutch squad won the Little Hawkeye Conference title. In four of his seasons at Pella, his teams received the Iowa High School State Athletic Association's Academic Team Award for having a combined grade point average above 3.25. Mours possesses a 66% career high school winning percentage in IAHSAA competition. Mours moved to the collegiate coaching ranks in June 2007 when he accepted a position as the head mens and womens tennis coach at Central College in Pella, IA. In a year and a half stint with the Dutch, Mours teams never finished lower than 3rd in the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) and had 12 academic all-conference players. He piloted the Central men to a 13-13 dual mark and a third-place Iowa Conference finish. The Central women placed third in the league both years as well and compiled a 21-12-1 dual record. His 2007 womens squad received a #16 Central Region ranking from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), which was the first such ranking for the Dutch Women in school history. In the fall of 2008, he piloted the Dutch Women to their second straight third-place finish at the conference team tournament Oct. 10-11 in Iowa City. Central advanced at least one entry into the semifinals of each of the five flights at the leagues individual tournament (Flights A, B and C singles; Flights A and B doubles). Mours shared the 2008 IIAC womens coach year honor with Eric Rodgers of Coe, in a vote of the leagues coaches. Bryan, his wife Tracy, and daughter Rylan reside in Dubuque. Mark W. Noll was named Head Women's Basketball Coach on May 1, 2007.
Noll, a native of Colfax, Wis. is a 2000 graduate of University of Wisconsin-Stout in Menomonie, Wis., where he has was assistant women's basketball coach for seven seasons overall. He has 17 years of coaching experience at all levels including collegiate, AAU and youth levels. He has been a significant presence in the recent success at UW-Stout women's basketball program in recent years which included three consecutive Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) basketball championships, WIAC tournament championships, and two "Sweet 16" finishes in the NCAA Division III National Championships. The women's team at Stout had been among the record attendance leaders for the past five seasons among Division III programs. Mark Noll's background also includes extensive experience as basketball coach, personal instructor and club promoter for the Wisconsin Amateur Athletic Union from 1989-2002. He assisted in every facet of running the nationally known Great Lakes Shootout Basketball Series. He coached AAU teams to the national level with numerous Top-8 finishes at the National Championships and Junior Olympics. He has coached over 100 players who went on to receive college scholarships, two Big Ten Freshman of the Year, two NCAA Kodak All-Americans, the top-3 all-time leading scorers in high school for the state of Wisconsin, two USA Basketball Team members, and three WNBA players. Corey Parr joined the Spartans as head women's softball coach in 2007.
Many things have changed since Parr took over the softball program. 2009 marked the first time a University of Dubuque softball team qualified for the IIAC tournament. 2009 also marked the first time the softball program defeated three top-20 teams in the country in one season. The programs record book has seen changes as well. During his first three years his teams have set new school season records for triples (12 in 2007), home runs (8 in 2007 & 2009), runs scored (141 in 2009) and RBIs (120 in 2009). He has also seen his pitching staff set a new season record for strikeouts with 174 in 2007.

Shane Schellsmidt serves as the head baseball coach for University of Dubuque. A native of New Albin, Iowa, Schellsmidt, attended the Iowa High School baseball powerhouse, Kee High School (Lansing, Iowa).
Along with his responsibilities at the University of Dubuque Coach Schellsmidt serves as an Associate Scout for the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Owner/GM River Valley League, a Collegiate Summer Wooden Bat League, consisting of players from NCAA D I thru D III, NJCAA and NAIA. Honors Under Coach Schellsmidt: " 52 School Records Set " Has Coached 2 Players who have Signed Professional Contracts " 1 NCAA National Statistical Champion - Home Runs " 1 NCAA National Statistical Champion - Slugging Percentage " 1 All-American " 6 All-Region Selections " 14 All Conference Selections " 2 All-Iowa Conference Batting Champions While at Kee High Schellsmidt was a member of one state championship title, two state runner-up titles, all-conference in baseball for four years, and a five-year letterman. Schellsmidt and his brother Andy Beck hold the most brother combo hits in Kee Hawk history (460). Notable high school statistic, Schellsmidt shares a state of Iowa record of doubles in a single game . Schellsmidt played two years of junior college baseball at Division 1 NJCAA, Southwestern Community College in Creston, Iowa, under legendary Coach Bill Krejci, Team USA Junior National Head Coach. He then transferred to the University of Dubuque where he earned his bachelor's degree in physical education. While playing for the Spartans, Schellsmidt battled knee injuries, but while on the field was a two-year starter at catcher and first base, also serving as a two year team captain. Memorable college moment, his first college hit was a 3-Run Homerun against Iowa Lakes Community College. Schellsmidt began his coaching career under to Iowa High School Hall of Fame Coaches in Gene Schultz and Dave Broders. As the assistant baseball coach at Kee High School, Schellsmidt had the chance to work under Gene Schultz, the nation's winningest high school coach. He then served as the head baseball coach at Bellevue High School in Bellevue, Iowa. Shane and his wife Stephanie reside in Dubuque with their two sons Carter and Cael.

Robbie Sieverding Biography - Click Here
Robbie Sieverding, the 16th head coach in the history of the program, was selected to lead the University of Dubuque men's basketball program in September of 2007. Prior to becoming head coach he served as an assistant for the men's basketball program. During his time at UD, the mens basketball program has made significant improvements in the highly competitive Iowa Conference. In his first two seasons as head coach, Sieverding guided the Spartans to its first back-to-back winning seasons in18 years. He also led the 2009-2010 team to an 18-9 overall record which was it's best record in 20 years. During his time at UD, Sieverding has coached 13 All-Iowa Conference performers as well as coaching the leagues top scorer in five different seasons. Sieverding is a native of Bellevue, Iowa, and attended Marquette High School. During his collegiate career, he played basketball at Marshalltown Community College from 1997-1998, and transferred to the University of Northern Iowa where he played from 1998-2002. Sieverding received All Missouri Valley Conference honors in 2000 and 2002; along with finishing his career 6th on the UNI All-Time scoring list, as well as 6th on the UNI All-Time assist list. Sieverding received his Bachelor of Arts degree along with a coaching minor in 2002 from the University of Northern Iowa. He completed his Masters degree in Athletic Administration in May of 2007. David Thompson Biography - Click Here
A native of Chicago, Ill., Thompson joins the Spartans program with extensive track and field experience, including success as a student-athlete at North Central College, a NCAA Division III powerhouse in the sport. Thompson's most recent coaching experience was as head coach at Ashford University and prior to Ashford, as an assistant coach at Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill.
He began developing his track and field resume as a student-athlete at North Central College in Naperville, Ill. He was named an NCAA Division III All-American 11 times and was a three-time National Champion (long jump, a member of a 4x100 meter relay, and 200 meter dash). He served as the captain of the track and field team from 1994-1998. Upon graduation, Thompson pursued a dream of qualifying for the Olympics by training in Indianapolis, Ind., with the Indiana Invaders, a Nike sponsored professional track and field club. While training full time, Thompson participated in instructional clinics for coaches and pursued his USATF Level 1 Coaching certification. He also organized youth summer programs promoting track and field to local area student-athletes. Thompson joined the staff at Ashford in 2006 and helped the program set over 20+ school records in his tenure. He coached three national qualifiers and helped the Saints claim seven indoor and four outdoor Conference Champions in 2008. Prior to Ashford, he was an assistant coach at Augustana College (Rock Island, Ill.) where he concentrated his coaching to primarily sprints, jumps, and multi-events. While there, he helped develop 16 All-Conference performers as well as three NCAA Division III national qualifiers. Stan Zweifel was named as head coach of the University of Dubuque Spartans in December of 2008. Most recently, Zweifel was the Assistant Head Coach/Offensive Coordinator at Minnesota State University-Mankato where he helped lead the Mavericks to a 9-3 season, an NSIC-South Division Championship, and a berth in the NCAA Division II Football Championships.
Prior to being a member of the Maverick Coaching Staff, Zweifel was the Assistant Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater for 16 seasons. During that time, the Warhawks enjoyed unparalleled success. They won six WIAC Conference Championships, played in 12 NCAA Division III playoff games and those culminated into two NCAA Division III National Championship games in 2005 and 2006. Zweifel was named the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the Year twice and was also a finalist for National Assistant Coach of the Year twice. In 2008, Zweifel was inducted into the Wisconsin Coaches Association Hall of Fame. In addition to his on the success Zweifel has enjoyed as a part of his accomplished coaching staffs, he has also written six books on offensive football and have produced 29 videos on the technical aspects of quarterbacks, wide receivers, and offensive line play. Stan has also presented at the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) national clinic and has twice been featured in the AFCA national publications. The AFCA recently made Coach Zweifel the first University of Dubuque Football Coach to have his technical and drill work published by the AFCA in the AFCA Technical Manual 2009. Zweifel is nationally known for his clinic lectures, as well as being a highly sought camp director across the country. Stan has been married to his wife Diane Heimerl Zweifel for 33 years. The Zweifels have four children: Saree is a teacher in San Diego, CA who graduated from the University of Minnesota and was a four-year letterwinner for the Golden Gophers. Shannon, a 2008 graduate of UW-River Falls, was a three-time All-American in Track for the Falcons. Michael is a sophomore at UW-River Falls where he has been a two-time All-American in football. Stans youngest son, Mark, is a freshman at the University of Dubuque where he is majoring in business. Coach Zweifel graduated from Evansville High School in 1970 where he was a three sport letterwinner. Stan graduated from UW-River Falls in 1974 as an eight time letterwinner: four in football and four in baseball. Upon graduation Zweifel became the head football coach at Markesan High School. Stan has been the Head Coach at Markesan High School, New Ulm High School in New Ulm, MN, Yankton College, and the University of Minnesota-Morris. He has also been the offensive coordinator at Northern Colorado University, Minnesota State University-Mankato, and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Coach Zweifel helped produce 23 All-Americans, 95 All-Conference players, and 11 players have continued on to play professional football. Dustin Bierman Biography - Click Here
A native of Newton, Illinois, Dustin Bierman began coaching at UD in 2008. Bierman began his basketball career at Parkland College in Champaign, Illinois. He then transferred to the University of Dubuque where he completed his playing career in 2002. While there he was named the men's basketball team MVP following his junior season in 2001.
Bierman started his coaching career in 2003 as a student-assistant under Marty McDermott at UD. He continued on with the Spartans as a graduate assistant helping the basketball program with scouting of opponents, breaking down film, on the floor instructions, and the recruiting of student-athletes. After two seasons with University of Dubuque as a graduate assistant, Bierman accepted a coaching position at Ashford University in Clinton, Iowa as the head women's golf coach and assistant men's basketball coach. Bierman help lead the basketball program to their best finish in eight seasons with a 16-13 recorded and a top four finish in the Midwest Collegiate Conference. He also led the women's golf program to the top level of the conference by finishing in the top three each season. In April of 2008, Bierman accepted the assistant men's basketball position on head coach Robbie Sieverding staff. Holding a bachelor of science degree from the University of Dubuque in 2004, Bierman completed his master's degree in Athletic Administration from Loras College in May of 2007. Jason Carlson joined the University of Dubuque Spartans in 2008 as the Mens Assistant Soccer Coach. Before coming to U.D. Jason was the Assistant Mens Soccer Coach at Trinity International University, in Gurnee, IL for two years.
While at T.I.U. Carlson helped guide the mens soccer program through two of its most successful seasons, he helped the Trojans capture: Two second place finishes in the Chicagoland Conference, Runners-up in the conference tournament, Semi-finalist in the NAIA regional tournament, and a #21 national ranking. Before T.I.U., Carlson served as the Assistant Mens Soccer Coach and Recruiting Coordinator for both mens and womens soccer programs at Hope International University in Fullerton, Ca. While coaching at H.I.U. Carlson helped lead the Royals to their first western region championship in over nine years and an appearance in the semi-finals of the NCCAA national tournament. He was also a member of the NCCAA Western Region Coaching Staff of the year. Carlson currently holds and USSF D license. He is also currently involved in the Dubuque Soccer Club and is the Head Womens Coach at Dubuque Senior High School. Previously, Carlson was a Director of Coaching for the Lincolnshire Lightening, in Lincolnshire, Ill. Carlson attended Victor Valley College (Victorville, Calif.) for two years, where he was an All Conference Honorable Mention, team Captain, and lead the Rams to their first Conference title in 31 years. Carlson later transferred to Hope International University where he was team captain, leading goal scorer, and an All-Region selection. Fello replaced Gary Griffin who left the Spartans staff to become the athletic director at Rockford Lutheran High School in Rockford, Ill.
"It's indeed a rare opportunity to bring aboard Bob Fello to the UD football program," commented head coach Stan Zweifel. "Coach Fello brings with him a wealth of experience in coaching, recruiting, and mentoring student-athletes as well as coaches." Fello has over 35 years of football experience as a coach, scout, teacher and administrator, and comes to UD after spending the last season with Marshal University and prior to that four seasons at The Citadel (three seasons as assistant head coach). Prior to The Citadel, Fello spent a year at the Big XII Conference office where he assisted with game day operations and coordinated the evaluation of conference officiating. "When my wife and I were looking at openings, we were looking for a good place with good people," commented Fello. "Having known Stan and assistant coach Mick Miyamoto for over 20 years and interacting with each other at various coaching clinics, we would sit around and talk about some day all of us coaching together. I'm excited to be here at UD, this is truly a family atmosphere and it gives me the opportunity to work with coaches who are in it for the right reasons. Student-athletes are here to get a quality education and play football for the love of the game. I loved the campus when I first visited, and after meeting with President Dr. Jeffrey Bullock and Joseph Chlapaty (Chairman of the Board, Cl '68), their vision and love for the University of Dubuque is infectious." During his tenure at The Citadel, Fello oversaw special teams. The Bulldogs produced the #1 punt returner in the FCS in 2008, All-American Andre Roberts. The Citadel finished the season as the top ranked punt return team in the nation (FCS) and the 13th-ranked squad for net punting. Fello has coached in five bowl games including two pre-season Kick-Off Classics; one in Giants Stadium and one at Arrowhead Stadium, and the first outdoor Big XII Championship Game also at Arrowhead.He has coached prominent players such as Dana Stubblefield who won a Super Bowl with the San Francisco 49ers, Gilbert Brown who won a the Super Bowl with the Green Bay Packers, Don Davis who won a Super Bowl with the St. Louis Rams and Darren Howard, a No. 1 draft pick for the New Orleans Saints. Before joining the Big XII staff, Fello spent two seasons, 2002-04, as the assistant head coach at SMU. While coaching at SMU, he coached the defensive line and coordinated the Mustangs' punt return and punt block schemes. His punt return unit set several single game and season records and was ranked third in the NCAA. From 1999 to 2001, Fello was the defensive line coach at Kansas State University under head coach Bill Snyder. He also assisted with special teams while coaching the Wildcats to the 2001 Southwestern Bell Cotton Bowl Classicplayed on January 1, 2001, the 2001 Insight.com Bowl played on Dec. 29, 2001 and 1999 Holiday Bowl played in San Diego on Dec. 29, 1999. During his tenure at K-State, Fello helped the Wildcats achieve a total defense national ranking of fourth in 2001. Both starting defensive ends, Monty Beisel and Chris Johnson, recorded at least 10 sacks and earned All-Big XII honors that season. He also helped Kansas State to a second-place mark in the nation in total defense in 1999. While coaching the 2000 K-State punt return team, which consisted of two-time All-American David Allen (1998, 1999) and All-American Aaron Lockett, Fello led them to a No. 1 ranking in punt return average. Fello also coached Darren Howard, KSU's career sack leader and Big XII sack leader. Preceding his years at KSU, Fello was the defensive and recruiting coordinator at James Madison University for one season. Coaching under head coach Alex Wood, Fello also concentrated his efforts in the Dukes' secondary. There he coached All-American Tony Booth who went on to play for the Carolina Panthers. Fello also spent time at Texas Christian University assisting Horned Frogs Head Coach Pat Sullivan. From 1995-97, he was the special teams coordinator and the defensive line coach at TCU. The Horned Frogs' 1995 squad was ranked in the top-20 in every special teams category. Fello coached Lou Groza Award winner Mike Reeder during that time. He began his coaching career at Kent State University as a graduate assistant coach, but progressed up the chain of command from linebackers' coach to defensive coordinator to recruiting coordinator from 1976-87. Following his stint at Kent State, Fello was with head coach Glen Mason at the University of Kansas from 1988-94. For the first four years on the Jayhawks' staff, Fello coached the outside linebackers and was their clinic coordinator. But from 1991-94, Fello served as the team's defensive leader as well as the tackles and linebackers coach. While at Kansas, Fello's defense led the Jayhawks to a 1992 Aloha Bowl victory over BYU. Before entering into the coaching profession, Fello was a three-year starter at Kent State, one season with legendary coach Don James, where he earned a bachelor's degree in health, physical education and recreation in 1974. "This is one of the best football coaches I have ever known in my 40 years of coaching, but what is more important to me and my staff is that he is a great person." added Zweifel. "I'm anxious to get started and try to build on what the Spartan staff did last year,"said Fello. "I look forward to learning the other schools in our league and getting a handle on what this league is all about. Mike Mandott, a native of Camanche, Iowa, joined the UD staff as a student assistant coaching the
defensive line in 2004 and also has been an assistant strength and conditioning coach for the school. He lettered as a freshman for the University of Dubuque in football before an injury ended his collegiate career.
Mandot graduated from the University of Dubuque in the spring of 2006 with a bachelors of science degree in health, wellness and recreation with a minor in coaching. He earned his CSCS certificate (Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist) from the National Strength and Conditioning Association. Mike Schmidt joined the University of Dubuque in 2008 as the Running Backs Coach and Recruiting Coordinator for the Spartans.
Schmidt joins the University of Dubuque after a stint as a graduate assistant at Minnesota State University-Mankato. While at MSU, Mike worked as the defensive line coach. The Mavericks finished with a 9-3 season, an NSIC-South Division Championship, and a berth in the NCAA Division II Football Championships. Schmidt coached one All-American and all four starting members of the defensive line were NSIC All-Conference honorees. Schmidt graduated from UW-La Crosse where he was a fullback on the football team and an outfielder/first baseman on the baseball team. At UW-L he was an eight- time letterwinner, four in football and four in baseball, and a three-time All-Conference team member while majoring in finance and marketing. Schmidt is a native of Menomonie, Wis., where he graduated from Menomonie High School and played for legendary high school coach Joe LaBuda. Kelly Tarrant joined the University of Dubuque Spartan soccer program in 2009. She was a two-year letter winner at Woodham High school in Pensacola, FL., where she led in goals scored both years. She was a two-time All-District selection and All-State Honorable Mention.
Tarrant played collegiately at the University of South Alabama for five seasons after receiving a medical red-shirt her senior year. During her career she was an All- Conference First and Second Team Selection and a member of the All-Tournament Team for the Sun Belt Conference. She is currently ranked third all time in career assists (20) and 6th all time with career goals (22). Following her college career Tarrant played with Portsmouth Ladies Football Club in Portsmouth, England and also for the London Gryphons, a W-league team in London, Ontario. Taylor, a native of Platteville, Wis., joined the Spartan coaching staff in 2009. He most recently was the defensive coordinator at Gustavus Adolphus College and served as pitching coach for one season with the baseball program. Taylor was an sintructor at Gustavus Adolphus in the health, exercise and science department. Prior to that he spent five years as the Dean of Students/Athletic Director for the Little Chute High School in Little Chute, Wis. Previously he also spent eight seasons coaching at UW-Platteville where his duties included defensive coordinator and head baseball coach.
