Spartan Athletics
Athletics Facilities
Located on McCormick Street off of University Ave is the home of the volleyball, women's and men's basketball teams. The Charles Meyers Fitness Center, locker rooms and the athletic training room is in the lower level of the building. History: In 1914, the gym was the gift of Nettie McCormick, Presbyterian widow of Cyrus McCormick, inventer of the McCormick reaper. In 1964, the structure doubled in size of the original gym. It was financed partly by Mr. and Mrs. A Douglas Donnell of Waterloo, Iowa. Mr. Donnell was the former CEO of Rath Packing Company, a loyal and generous board member (1940-1978), and chair (1949-1964). With characteristic modesty, Mr. Donnell declined to have his name associated with the new addition. Donnell Hall is named in his honor. Charles Myers Fitness Center Located in the lower level of McCormick Gymnasium is the Charles Myers Fitness Center All students are able to utilize the fitness center with their school ID. If you do not have an ID or pass, you will not be allowed to enter.
Stoltz Sports Center The Stoltz SportsCenter is connected to McCormick Gymnasium. Various practices, wrestling competitions and intramurals events are common in this facility. The lower level of the center is where the Knox Coix classroom, raquetball courts, equipment storage and locker rooms are located. Coaches offices are on the upper level in this building History: Built in 1989, the sports center was made possible through the efforts and generosity of alumnus Charles E. Stoltz and other dedicated UD alumni and friends. Mr. Stoltz is a prominent Dubuque and Omaha meat packing entrepreneur. Chalmers Field
Located south of the Stoltz Sports Center is home for the Spartans football, track and field teams. History: In 1942, the field was named in honor of UD's highly successful football coach, respected Dubuque Judge, John G. Chalmers, who regarded coaching at UD as his hobby. Douglas J. Miller Track The outdoor track facility, located around Chalmers Field, is named the Douglas J. Miller Track. The Frank Farber Tennis Courts The tennis courts are located just west of the football field, at the south end of McCormick Street. History: In 1990, the tennis courts were funded by the Frank Farber family, successful Dubuque business leaders. James and David Farber are UD alumni.
Baseball Field
The UD baseball field is located directly south of the football field.
Softball Field
The UD Softball Field is located east of the football field, south of Cassat and Donnell Halls.
The Meadows Golf Course
Located at 15766 Clover Lane in Asbury, Iowa is the home for Spartans golfing practice and events. Oyen Soccer Field Located adjacent to U. S. Highway 20, the field is 80 yards wide by 120 yards long and was the second field in the Iowa Conference to have a lighted natural grass turf. The field serves both as a practice and game site for the men's and women's soccer teams.
