Coach Zweifel enters his third season at the University of Dubuque with a great deal of enthusiasm and optimism. The Spartans return ten offensive starters and six defensive starters from the 2010 team that was crippled by major injuries.Although the Spartans only have seven seniors, they are bolstered by 39 juniors and 44 sophomores from last years squad.
Most recently, Zweifel was the Assistant Head Coach/Offensive Coordinator at Minnesota State University-Mankato where he helped lead the Mavericks to a 9-3 season, an NSIC-South Division Championship, and a berth in the NCAA Division II Football Championships. Prior to being a member of the Maverick Coaching Staff, Zweifel was the Assistant Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater for 16 seasons. During that time, the Warhawks enjoyed unparalleled success. They won six WIAC Conference Championships, played in 12 NCAA Division III playoff games and those culminated into two NCAA Division III National Championship games in 2005 and 2006.

Travis Zajac rejoins the Spartans football staff in 2011. Zajac served as an assistant coach for the Spartans from 2001-2008 coaching inside linebackers and offensive line. During his previous eight seasons on the Spartan staff he coached nine All-Iowa Conferenece performers.
For two seasons (2009, 2010) he was an assistant football coach at Wahlert Catholic High School serving as defensive coordinator, coaching linebackers and offensive line. During his tenure he coached 11 All-Mississippi Valley Conference student-athletes. He is a member of the faculty at UD as a Teaching Specialist Faculty in the Core Curriculum. Along with his teaching responsibilities, he serves as the coordinator of Voices/Values, a program dedicated to developing personal empowerment for students, faculty and staff. Zajac is a native of Sturgeon Bay, Wis. And graduated from Southern Door High School in 1997. As a prep Zajac earned all-conference honors in football. He was a team captain, two-year starter, and an all-conference and All-American selection playing as an inside linebacker at Mount Senario College. He received his bachelor of science degree in education from UD and a master's of arts in communication from UD as well. He is married to Shannon Becker-Zajac, a registered nurse at Medical Associates Clinic, and they have two children Lauren (3) and Ty (1) and reside in Dubuque. |

Tyler Simmons

Tyler Simmons begins his first season with the Spartans in 2011 as an assistant linebacker coach. Before joining the Spartans he worked at Lisle Senior High School in Lisle, Ill. Simmons served as the JV offensive and defensive line coach, freshmen offensive coordinator, and varsity assistant working with the offensive side in 2008, 2009 and defensive side in 2010.
Prior to his time at Lisle, he was sophomore linebacker coach at Naperville Central in Naperville, Ill., in 2007 and freshmen offensive line and linebacker coach at Hempstead in 2006. An alumnus of UD, Simmons played linebacker and center for the Spartans from 2002-2005 and graduated with a degree in education in 2006. He earned two varsity letters and was an Academic All-Iowa Conference twice. A native of Albia, Iowa, he graduated from Albia Communicty High School in 2002 where he was a three-year letterwinner in football earning All-District, Academic All-District and Ottumwa Courier All-Regional honors. He and his wife Kelly reside in East Dubuque, Ill. |

John Osweiler

Jon Osweiler is in his second season as an assistant coach working with the defensive line. He is a 1978 graduate of St. Ambrose and a veteran high school coach. He was a football coach at Tri-County High School from 1993-2002 and served as the athletic Director from 1999-2002. He was the head football coach at Dubuque Senior High School from 2002-2008. He previously coached boy's basketball and softball teams during his career and currently teaches in the Dubuque Community School District.

Ryan Adamovich is a graduate assistant for the Spartans in 2011. He is a 2010 graduate of Wisconsin Lutheran College where he majored in communications and minored in coaching. He played wide receiver and started for the Warriors for three seasons (2006-2009) He finished with 71 catches for 743 yards and six touchdowns and was a member of the first football team to finish above .500 in conference at WLC.
A native of Kaukauna, Wis., he was a two-year letterwinner, team captain, and an All-Fox Valley Association Honorable Mention as a prep. He was a three-year letterwinner in track and field and also played basketball at Kaukauna. |

Jon Kyte enters his first season on the University of Dubuque staff in 2011, directing the defensive line and coordinating the special teams. Prior to coming to Dubuque he spent a season on the Augsburg College (Minn.) staff, directing the linebackers, defensive line and special teams. He also served as video coordinator and assistant recruiting coordinator for the Auggies. He coached one MIAC All-Conference player. Kyte served for two seasons (2008-2009) as an assistant coach (tight ends) at Division II Winona State University (MN), where he coached two all-conference NSIC tight ends. In 2007, he was an assistant coach at Anamosa High Schoolworking with the offensive and defensive lines. He also served two seasons (2004-2005) as a graduate assistant coach at Winona State University (MN). Where he was a part of 2 conference championships, qualified for the playoffs in 2004, coached the 2005 NSIC defensive player of the year and 3 All Conference players. Kyte was a defensive lineman at Wartburg for two seasons (2000-2001) and finished as a student assistant for the last two seasons (2002-2003), where he was part of two Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship and NCAA Division III playoff qualifying squads. His Knight class went 38-6 in his career, the best four-year record in school history. Kyte is a native of Monticello, Iowa, where he was an all-district and all-conference player in high school, as well as the Bernie Saggau Award honoree. Mike Schmidt is in his 3rd season with the University of Dubuque football program. He serves as the Defensive Coordinator and Linebackers coach. Schmidt's recruiting area is Central and Western Wisconsin. Since coming to UD, Coach Schmidt has been a versatile member of the Spartan Coaching Staff. He served as the Defensive Backs coach in 2009 and the Offensive Line coach in 2010 before moving back to the defensive side. Coach Schmidt came to the University of Dubuque after a stint as a Graduate Assistant at Minnesota State University-Mankato in 2008. While at MSU, Mike worked as the Defensive Line Coach. The Mavericks finished with a 9-3 season, an NSIC-South Division Championship, and a berth in the NCAA Division II Football Championships. Coach Schmidt coached 1 All-American and all four starting members of the Defensive Line were NSIC All-Conference members. Mike graduated from UW-La Crosse where he was a Fullback on the Football team and an Outfielder/First Baseman for the Baseball team. At UW-L he was an 8 time letter winner, 4 in football and 4 in baseball, and a 3 time all-conference team member while majoring in Finance and Marketing. Coach Schmidt is a native of Menomonie, WI where he graduated from Menomonie High School and played for legendary high school coach Joe LaBuda. Mike helped guide his team to an undefeated season and a state championship and was a unanimous first team all state selection in football his senior season. Jake Olsen

Jake Olsen , a native of Osage, Iowa is in his first season with the Spartan staff primarily coaching wide receivers. Previously Olsen was offensive coordinator at Southern Oregon University working with quarterbacks and wide receivers (2006-10). Under his tutelage at SOU his offenses produced three NAIA All-Americans: Jordan Myers (1st Team All-American Offensive Lineman); Vance Beach (1st Team All-American and record setting wide receiver); Brandon Baldwin (NAIA Offensive Player of the Year and back-to-back 1,000 yard rusher). He also coached 14 All-Independent NAIA performers while serving as teams strength and conditioning coordinator.
He began his coaching career at Rockford College where he received his master's of arts in teaching degree. He coached the Regents quarterbacks and wide receivers while holding the title of Passing Game Coordinator. In 2005, the Regents re-wrote 13 school offensive records behind the arm of All-UMAC quarterback Travis Stocker who finished in Top-10 of passing efficiency. Olsen is a 2003 graduate of Wartburg College where he recieved an elementary education degree. At Wartburg he was a four-year letterwinner in both football and basketball, earning All-Iowa Conference honors in both sports. He was a member of two IIAC Football Championships and one IIAC Basketball Championship as a student-athlete. Olsen and his wife Liz reside in Peosta with their two sons Liam (3) and Noah (2). |

Taylor Herbst

Taylor Herbst is a native of Dubuque, Iowa and joined the Spartans staff in 2011 as a graduate assistant. He was a member of the Iowa Hawkeyes from 2006-2009 earning the Team Lead Award on Special Teams in 2008 and on Offense in 2007. He is a 2009 graduate of Iowa as an Interdepartmental Studies (Health Science) major.
In high school, Herbst played for Spartan assistant coach John Osweiler and earned National Honor Society and Academic All-Conference honors. He earned first team All-Conference honors as a junior and senior. He was team captain as a senior. He lettered twice in football as a quarterback and defensive back. He completed 92-181 passes of 1,112 yards 14 touchdowns and a junior, setting school records for completions and attempts in a season. He completed 62-127 attempts as a senior for 886 yards and 16 touchdowns as a senior. He earned four letters in track, competing in the 200, 400, and 800 meter events. |

Drew Nystrom, a native of Crystal Lake, Ill., joined the Spartan football program in 2011 after spending the 2010 season as a graduate assistant with the University of Memphis Tigers. While a part of the Memphis football staff, Nystrom assisted in leading the Tiger offense to rank No. 1 nationally in red zone scoring offense. He also assisted in coaching senior offensive lineman, Dominik Riley, to being named 2nd Team All-Conference USA.
Prior to his time with at Memphis, Nystrom was a part of the University of Delaware football staff in 2009 which finished 2nd in the Colonial Athletic Association in passing (243.4 yards per game) and fifth in total offense (355.0 yards per game). Nystrom worked with Corey Nicholson as he completed his season with a 2nd Team All-CAA performance for the Fightin' Blue Hens. In 2008, Nystrom served as tight ends coach for the Wabash College Little Giants on their way to a 10-2 finish in which they took home the North Coast Athletic Conference title and earned a berth to the second round of the NCAA Division III playoffs. The Little Giants reached as high as No. 2 in the national polls and finished with both tight ends, Scott Liska and Chad Sorenson, earning 1st Team and Honorable Mention All-NCAC honors, respectively. An alumnus of Bowling Green State University, Nystrom earned four letters as an offensive tackle for the Falcons from 2003-2007. In his time at BGSU, the Falcons finished with a 38-24 record and earned three trips to post-season bowl games, Motor City Bowl (2003) and the GMAC Bowl (2004, 2008). Nystrom started 34 games in his career before capping it off by being named 2nd Team All-Mid American Conference and 1st Team Academic All-MAC as a senior. Nystrom completed his B.S. in Biology from Bowling Green State University in 2007 and his M.Ed. in Higher Education Administration from the University of Delaware in 2011. He is single and resides in Cuba City, WI. |

Gene Will joined the University of Dubuque in 2011 after previously spending four seasons at Wabash College. While at Wabash his responsibilities consisted of head JV coach, wide receivers position coach, and was the video coordinator.
During his four years, Wabash competed in the national playoffs three times advancing as far as the Elite-8. He coached six receivers to all-conference honors, and twice had a player named pre-season All-American. He also worked on special teams coaching the return men, where the team finished as high as #2 and #6 in the nation in punt and kickoff returns. His 2009 receiving corps caught 231 passes for 3,168 yards and 29 touchdowns. Junior Kody LeMond set Wabash and NCAC records for receiving yards in 2008, making 73 catches for 1,228 yards and 14 scores. Prior to Wabash, he spent two seasons at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater as a graduate assistant for both of the Warhawks' national runner-up teams before joining the Wabash staff in 2007. Will earned his master's of science at UW-Whitewater, while also working in the academic advising and testing office. A three-year letterman as a wide receiver of the University of Dayton Flyers' football team, he was a member of two PFL championship teams. During his sophomore season, the Flyers won their first I-AA Mid-Major national championship. Will majored in sports management at Dayton, with a Minor in Exercise Fitness. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 2005. A native of Nappanee, Ind., Will was a three-year letter winner and two-time all-state selection as a defensive back and wide receiver at Northwood High School. He was nominated and participated in the Indiana North-South All Star game in 2001. |
