2019 Season Stats 2019 Game-by-Game
The Spartan women began the year with a 7-2 and in conference play they would rack up wins over Buena Vista, Wartburg, Coe and Simpson, while tying Luther and Central to cap the regular season with a mark of 11-4-2 overall and 4-3-2 in conference action to earn the three seed in the conference tournament.
In the first round of the A-R-C Tournament, UD would take down Coe 1-0, to beat the Kohawks for the second time in a five day span. In the tournament semifinals, the Spartans traveled to Waverly to take on Wartburg, where they played in blizzard like conditions and wound up falling to the Knights, 3-0.
After earning honorable mention honors as a freshman in 2016, Alexa Martin (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Prairie) has closed out her stellar career with three straight all-conference seasons in 2017, 2018 and 2019. Martin has dished out a career-high 12 assists, which gives her the second most assists in the conference, one behind the leader. The 12 assists also are the fifth most in a single season in program history. To go along with the assists, Martin has started all 18 games and scored one goal, which was a game winner in a 3-2 win over Monmouth.
Four year starter, Amanda Chlebek (Lombard, Ill./Glenbard East) grabbed the first all-conference honors of her career. In her senior season, the midfielder has been as steady as they come, coming up with four goals and one assists for nine points. Chlebek has played and started in all 18 games for the Spartans in 2019 and has one game winning goal.
Carissa Brown (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) is now three for three in all-conference honors in her careers. The 2017 Conference Defensive Player of the Year has helped hold down the UD back line, limiting opponents to 145 shots, 76 less shots than the Spartans have taken. Brown took just four shots in 2019, scoring one goal and handing out one assist for three points.
After being all-conference as a freshman and honorable mention as a sophomore, Victoria Roethler (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson) is once again all-conference as a junior. Roethler has started all 18 games in goal for the Spartans, totaling 1608:23 minutes in net. Roethler has saved 62 shots and only allowed 16 goals for a goal allowed average of .90. On her way to a 12-4-2 record, she posted eight shutouts, the most among all American Rivers Conference goalkeepers.
In her freshman season, Brooke Brodzinski (Minooka, Ill./Minooka) made her presence felt, starting 17 of 18 games played and leading the team with six goals, which is good for the 12th most in the conference. She also leads the team in shots by a wide margin with 62 shots, with the next highest being 23.

Season Overview
Seniors Lauren Cangelosi, Olivia Sullivan and Lexus Rose helped lead the Spartans to their first double-digit win season since 2015 as they finished with a 14-4-1 overall mark in 2018 and compiled a 5-2-1 record in American Rivers Conference play.
UD started the season with a bang as they defeated UW-Eau Claire in overtime, 1-0. After falling to North Central in the second game of the season, the Spartans rattled off five in a row, seven out of eight and went 12-1-1 in their next 14.
The Spartans went into the conference tournament as the fourth seed, hosting Central College in the first round and coming out with a dominant 3-1 win. In the A-R-C Semifinals, UD went down the road to face Loras, scoring two goals off penalty kicks but fell short, losing 3-2 to the Duhawks.
Rose, Cangelosi and Sullivan all earned All-Conference honors for their efforts during their senior campaign. Rose and Cangelosi were a dynamic duo for the Spartan attack as the two combined for 50 of UD’s 104 points in 2018. Rose led the team in points and was fifth in the A-R-C with 26 total points and was also third in the conference with a team-high 11 goals. Cangelosi’s points were split evenly amongst points and assists as she had eight of each. Her team best eight assists were the second most in the American Rivers Conference, just two behind the leader and her eight goals put her right behind Rose at eighth in the conference. The two combined for 11 game-winning goals with Rose leading the conference with seven and Cangelosi tied for third at four. Rose’s seven game winners, ties the UD single season record for game-winners in a season. Sullivan was a do-it-all defender for the Spartans as she started 15 of the 16 games she played in during her senior campaign, recording two goals on 11 shots for four points. Among all regulars, Sullivan had the best shot on goal percentage of any Spartans this season with a percentage of .636.
After earning Conference Defensive Player of the Year as a freshman in 2017, Carissa Brown backed that up with First Team All-North Region and All-Conference honors in 2018. Brown helped hold down the Spartan back line by limiting opponents to just 20 goals over 19 games. She also helped limit the opponent to just 9.4 shots per game while the UD offense took 15.5 a game. Brown recorded one goal on six shots in 2018. After being named honorable mention her freshman season in 2016, Alexa Martin has now earned all-conference honors in back-to-back years in 2017 and 2018. The defender and midfielder from Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Prairie High School played and started in all 19 of UD’s games. Martin scored two goals and dished out five assists during her junior season, while having a shot on goal percentage of .613.
Victoria Roethler grabbed honorable mention honors, a year after being named all-conference her freshman season.

2017 Season Stats Game by Game
After missing out on the Iowa Conference Tournament in 2016, the Spartans bounced back in a big way in 2017, finishing with an overall record of 9-4-4 and earning the second seed in the Iowa Conference Tournament.
The Spartan defense held opponents in check all season, limiting opponents to 14 goals for 0.82 goals per game. UD outscored their opponents 22-14 over the course of the year, including 14-5 in the second half.
After a loss on September 23rd, UD went on to win or tie their final eight regular season games, with six of those being wins. The Spartans defended their home turf all year long, going 7-1-1 at Oyen Field in 2017
Seven Spartans received postseason honors from the Iowa Conference, headlined by defender Carissa Brown who was named Defensive Player of the Year and All-Conference. Joining Brown on the All-Conference list was Victoria Roethler, Alexa Martin, Lauren Cangelosi and Olivia Sullivan. Amanda Chlebek and Lexus Rose were selected as honorable mention. All seven of those Spartans have eligibility for the 2018 season.
Lauren Cangelosi led the team in points with 18 on four goals and 10 assists. Lexus Rose tied Cangelosi for a team high four goals but played in three less games. Freshman Victoria Roethler was the goalkeeper for the majority of the season, playing in 14 games with 12 starts. She recorded 73 saves, while only surrendering seven goals over 1264:22 minutes in the net, going 6-1-4 with eight shutouts.

Spartan Senior Trio Departs as Winningest Class in School History
DUBUQUE, Iowa - Senior starters Katie Lynn, Kim Trinco, and Lisa Rosas helped the University of Dubuque women's soccer team compile their fourth-straight, double-digit win season after finishing 10-7-2 and claiming the sixth and final seed in the Iowa Conference tournament. The Spartans compiled a 2-4-1 record in IIAC play and were eliminated in round one of the IIAC tourney. The senior trio completed their career with a school record of 53 career wins.
Lynn and Trinco were named to the All-IIAC First team and led a group of five Spartans including Emily Meeker, Kyleigh McLaughlin, and freshman Lauren Cangelosi that were named All-Iowa Conference. It was the fourth straight year five or more Spartans were honored.
Despite losing five All-IIAC senior players from a year ago, the Spartans started off hot with a 9-2-1 record that included their first ever 1-1-1 start to a season and their first ever win over UW-La Crosse. In the week of September 22, UD ascended to a No. 24 NSCAA national ranking for the third-straight season and tied their highest-ever NSCAA regional ranking at No. 2. Defensively, the Spartans allowed a mere six goals during that opening span.
UD concluded the season 1-5-1, including a near comeback in overtime defeat at Luther, 3-2, and a 2-2, double overtime draw at No. 15 Coe.
Lynn led the Iowa Conference in shots by a wide margin with 43 shots in seven Iowa Conference games. The 2014 Honorable Mention Iowa Conference selection set the school record with 116 shots and tied for second with six game-winners, including five in the first eight games, in 2015. The Fox River Grove, Ill. native now holds the school record with 15 career game winners and 293 career shots attempted. Lynn finished with nine goals, seven assists, 25 points, 116 shots (51 on goal), and six game-winners.
Trinco was named to the 2015 CoSIDA Academic All-District team for her efforts both in and out of the classroom, anchored the Spartans defensive backline after starting all 19 games, including 72 of 75 in her career. The Schaumburg, Ill. native distributed her fourth career assist in season-opening win over Carthage on September 1 in a successful non-conference slate that featured four shut outs in their first five games.
"At the end of a season you look back to the beginning to find out what you accomplished along the way," Head Coach Jason Berna said. "Even though the season did not finish as planned, we as a team accomplished a lot together in 2015 to be proud of. The University of Dubuque women's soccer program was nationally ranked for the third straight year, tied their highest regional ranking in school history, attained double-digit wins for the ninth time, and for the first time we earned double-digit wins for four straight seasons. The foundation is laid for success here and we will start planning and training for next year to continue that success. Special thanks to the three graduating seniors - they have truly helped lift this program to new heights!"

Season Overview
Monumental was the operative word after the Spartans captured both the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) regular season and tournament titles for the first time in program history after finishing 16-5-1, 6-1 IIAC. It was only the second time in school history any intercollegiate sports team has won both titles in the same season. The pair of titles vaulted the Spartans into the NCAA tournament where they fell in the first round, 4-2. During the season, Head Coach Jason Berna captured his 200th combined victory between his current women's tenure and his time as UD men’s head coach.
Securing the IIAC tournament title was a thrilling affair after eight saves by UD GK Tiffany Duncan and nine saves by the opposition led to a 0-0 2OT draw, decided by a combined 18 penalty kicks. After the initial five penalty kicks taken by both sides, D Kelsey Graefen and MF Alora Esparza delivered in back-to-back convert-or-go-home kicks to set up MF Melanie Prudhomme’s game winner on the 18th kick. F Katie Lynn came off the bench to score both goals in 2-1 triumph in the IIAC semifinals.
Newly turfed Oyen field saw its first women’s victory on September 6, 2-0. The victory was part of a six-game winning streak to start the season and included five shutouts and two total goals allowed. GK Duncan and the defense held true for the remainder of the season as the Spartans led the IIAC in goals allowed in conference play (5) and overall (44).
The senior laden group achieved a first-time ever no. 22 NSCAA national ranking, program-best no. 5 NSCAA regional ranking, and earned program victory no. 150 over rival Loras in 3-2 (2OT) win on October 1.
"We always talk about raising the bar each season in our program, 2014 was no different as we set very high goals to accomplish," said Head Coach Jason Berna. "Coming off a good year in 2013 and returning nine seniors we knew we had the leadership and experience to achieve each goal we set! The girls did just that, winning Conference for the first time in program history, winning our second conference tournament title, and being ranked each week of the season in the region with the highlight being the #22 spot in the nation in week three."
F Siepler’s game-winning goal on October 14 in 2-1 victory earned her the UD record for most career game-winning goals in school history (13). Siepler finished her career with the fifth-most shots on goal (89) while finishing with two first team All-IIAC honors. D Waddell matched Siepler’s first team All-IIAC honors and added a second team All-IIAC honor in 2012. D Waddell played a key role in the Spartan defense and is the only defender in school history to earn three All-IIAC awards (second team or better).
GK Duncan earned her second straight Second Team All-IIAC honor and finished her decorated career ranked Top-5 in UD history in all five major career goalkeeping categories, including record holder in goals allowed average (0.94).
The Spartan senior class boasted the best four-year record in school history (52-25-4) and for good reason. One of the most experienced groups, in any UD intercollegiate sport, featured three seniors that played over 80 career games and four that started at least 74 matches.
Academically, the University of Dubuque women's soccer team earned the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Team Academic Award for having above a 3.0 cumulative grade point average. The Spartans women's soccer accumulated a 3.45 team average during the 2014-15 season.
UD also received the NSCAA Team Ethics and Sportsmanship Award (Bronze Award) given to 35 teams across the country, in all divisions. The recipients accumulated no more than 10 yellow cards throughout the season.
"I am so proud of the team's accomplishments this year and this will always be a special season for me personally," added Coach Berna. "We finally won it all after starting the program 14 years ago. I feel we have established this program as a consistent regional contender, while also seeing our players achieve even more in the class room. setting records for academic all-conference and all-region. I would like to specially thank our nine seniors and their families for all their support and hard work to get the program to this point! Go Spartans!"

The 2013 University of Dubuque Women's Soccer team finished the season with an overall record of 16-5-0 and tied for second place in the Iowa Conference at 5-2-0. The Spartans advanced to the finals of the Iowa Conference Tournament for the second straight season. UD opened with a 3-0 win over Simpson in the First Round. Dubuque then won 1-0 on the road at Luther in the semifinals before losing in the IIAC Finals. UD finished the regular season ranked #7 in the NSCAA North Region Poll. The 2013 Spartans set school records in wins (16), consecutive wins (6), home wins (10), and fewest goals allowed (18).
Head Coach Jason Berna was named IIAC Coach of the Year for the fourth time and second consecutive year. Senior Alexandra Watkins and juniors Megan Siepler (Forward) and Lauren Waddell (Defense) were named First Team All-Iowa Conference. Juniors Tiffany Duncan (Goalkeeper), Kelsey Graefen (Defense), and Melanie Prudhomme (Midfield) were selected as Second Team All-IIAC. Junior Liz Frazier (Midfield) was recognized as Honorable Mention.

The Spartans beat Simpson 4-0 in the opening round of the IIAC Tournament before losing in the semifinals. Seniors Natalie Baker (Goalkeeper), Sara Fassbinder (Forward), Ashly Hamilton (Midfielder), and Sidney Rangel (Defender) along with freshman Alexandra Watkins (Forward) all made 1st Team All-Iowa Conference. Senior midfielder Emily Azinger earned 2nd Team All-IIAC. Rangel was named 3rd Team NSCAA All-North Region.

The 2009 Women’s Soccer team finished the season with an overall record of 15-6-1 and second place in the Iowa Conference at 6-2-0. The Spartans beat Loras in Penalty Kicks after tying 1-1 after two overtimes in the semifinals of the IIAC Tournament. UD would win 1-0 over Simpson in the finals to advance to the NCAA Division III National Tournament. The Spartans 15 wins set a new school record for wins in a season.
Junior Sara Fassbinder was named the MVP of the Iowa Conference while Head Coach Jason Berna was named the IIAC Coach of the Year. Joining Fassbinder (Forward) on the 1st Team was junior Sidney Rangel (Defender). Juniors Natalie Baker (Goalkeeper), Ashly Hamilton (Midfielder), and Madeline Mobile (Midfielder) all earned 2nd Team All-IIAC. Fassbinder and Rangel each earned 2nd Team NSCAA All-North Region honors.
Ashley Bliznick, Gina May, and Madeline Mobile each earned Academic All-Iowa Conference. The Spartans earned their second consecutive NSCAA Academic Team Award.

Season Overview
The 2008 Women’s Soccer team finished the season with an overall record of 9-8-3 and fifth place in the Iowa Conference at 4-3-1. The Spartans lost in the opening round of the IIAC Tournament. Sophomore Ashly Hamilton (Midfielder) was named 1st Team All-Iowa Conference. Sophomore Chelsea Hamilton (Forward) earned 2nd Team All-IIAC. Ashley Bussan (Defense) and Madeline Mobile (Midfielder) were recognized as Honorable Mention selections.
Ashley Bussan, Bethany Fountain,and Madeline Mobile each earned Academic All-Iowa Conference. The Spartans earned their second NSCAA Academic Team Award in three years.

Freshman Chelsea Kittleson (Forward) and Madeline Mobile (Midfielder) earned 2nd Team All-Iowa Conference. Ashley Bussan (Defender), Lindsy Loney (Defender), and Sidney Rangel (Midfielder) were all recognized as Honorable Mention All-IIAC selections.

Landolt was also selected 3rd Team D3kicks.com All-Central Region.

The 2005 Women’s Soccer team finished the season with an overall record of 12-6-2 and third place in the Iowa Conference at 5-2-1. The Spartans won 1-0 over Cornell in the opening round of the IIAC Tournament before losing in the semifinals. Junior Kim Monigold was named the MVP of the Iowa Conference while Head Coach Jason Berna was named the IIAC Coach of the Year. Joining Monigold (Forward) on the 1st Team All-IIAC was sophomore Caitlin Tero (Midfielder). Senior Maggie Stevens (Defense) earned 2nd Team All-IIAC. Monigold was also selected 3rd Team NSCAA All-Central Region.
