Borrowing and Renewing
Who can borrow?
The Library is open to current students, faculty, and staff of University with a current, valid identification card, as well as current students, faculty, and staff from Wartburg Theological Seminary (WTS), NICC, Loras College, and Clarke College with current, valid school identification cards. In addition, the library participates in the State Library of Iowa's Open Access program, which means that anyone who lives in the state of Iowa may check books out with a valid identification (current driver's license, for example).
Additional information for Open Access patrons is available here.
UD students and staff may check out books and most multimedia for four weeks. Material may be renewed twice if it is not needed by another person or for reserve. UD and Wartburg Theological Seminary faculty may check out material for the semester. All faculty material must physically be returned to the library at the end of spring semester.
Current students, faculty, and staff from NICC, Loras College, and Clarke College and participants in the State of Iowa's Open Access program may check material out for four weeks.
Periodicals, DVDs and videocassettes circulate for 14 days and only to UD and WTS students, faculty, and staff.
Reference books do not circulate.
Any material that is checked out may be recalled. If a book that is checked out is needed by another person, the loan period for the person who has the book changes from four weeks (for students and staff) or the semester (for faculty) to two weeks from checkout. Material needed for reserve or class viewing (DVDs, etc.) will be immediately recalled. Hold requests and recalls are not available for Open Access patrons.
Material that is not returned within three weeks of the due date will be declared lost. Patrons will be billed for lost items upon the end of each semester. Replacement charges will be assessed as follows:
- $40 per book
- $25 per DVD (except TV seasons)
- $50 per TV season or video game
- $25 per magazine or journal issue
Charges for other items will be determined based upon replacement cost.
An additional $25 processing fee will also be assessed per item.
Prior to billing, patrons receive overdue messages as well as a letter itemizing lost items. Items returned prior to billing incur no charges (the library does not charge overdue fines).
Once the business office has processed end-of-semester billing, returns are no longer accepted and refunds are no longer granted. Library staff will purchase replacement materials if necessary. Patrons should not purchase replacement items.
