A best-selling author and lecturer at Northwestern University, Kotlowitz is known for his empathetic approach to journalism. His talkwill focus on the need to tell stories honestly and ethically, maintaining the integrity of those whose stories we are telling.

Kotlowitz’s latest book, An American Summer: Love and Death in Chicago, challenges us to see people as complex individuals, to recognize that violence is trauma and "trauma fractures memory," and to grow in empathy for others. We can write people off or we can respond compassionately, listening and learning from their stories.
