DUBUQUE, IOWA – The University of Dubuque Men’s Tennis team was named an Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic Team award winner. The Spartans were one of 40 Division III teams to earn the award on the men’s side for the 2012-13 academic year. In addition, five Spartan student-athletes earned the honor of ITA Scholar-Athlete. The UD Women's Tennis team joined the men's team to become the only Iowa Conference school to place both teams on the ITA All-Academic team list.

Highlighting the list of Scholar-Athlete award winners was Shawn Iben (Clinton, Iowa/Camanche), who was also named First Team Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District in the spring. A double major, Iben graduated with degrees in Computer Information Systems and Business Administration while posting a 3.89 GPA. The Spartans also placed their #1, #2, and #3 singles players on the list with Demetrius Johnson (Brown Deer, Wis./Brown Deer), Nikolay Gospodinov (Mons, Belguim/SHAPE), and Michael Braden (Eldridge, Iowa/North Scott) all earning the award. Johnson leaves UD as one of only six Spartans to win over 100 overall matches with 111 career wins. Gospodinov finished the 2012-13 season as the Spartans leader in wins with 15. Two-sport athlete Andrew Drummond (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West) was the fifth Spartan to make the cut and be named ITA Scholar-Athlete.

The ITA All-Academic Team Award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or above (on a 4.0 scale). To be included in the team GPA, a student-athlete must have competed in one or more varsity matches. The GPA is calculated for the current academic year (Fall-2012 and Spring-2013).

In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including freshman thorough senior year).
