Spartans Upended by League Champion Beavers

The University of Dubuque men's basketball held the IIAC Championship finish in their hands on Wednesday, but it was a hot shooting Buena Vista University Beaver team which snatched it away for their own with a 94-80 victory over the Spartans. BV jumped out to an early lead and everytime the Spartans rallied to within a handful of points, BV responded with a deep three pointer.

The University of Dubuque men's tennis battled for over four hours and lost the fight in their Iowa Conference opener to Wartburg College 3-6. UD fell short in two out of three doubles in extra points and lost two singles matches in a third tie break set. The Spartans bounced back in the night cap seinging past Knox College 6-3 to improve to 3-5 overall.

The University of Dubuque men's lacrosse team opened their 2015 season against unbeaten Rockhurst University (2-0) and lost 4-17 to the hosts. A quartet of Spartans would finish the afternoon with a goal. Andrew Triantos, Joshua Cramer, Britton Harris, and Andrew Poncer all scored for UD. The Spartans finished with 12 shots in the loss.

The University of Dubuque needed some help from the only team to have swept them this season to capture the #2 seed in the 2015 IIAC Tournament. In front of a near capacity crowd on Senior Day the Spartans learned their fate before their dominating 77-63 victory on Jon Davison Court in Stoltz Sports Center. Buena Vista lost to Coe in Cedar Rapids which knotted the Spartans in the standing with the Kohawks (10-4). Coe held the edge in the tie break after splitting in league play with IIAC champion Buena Vista.

On Monday, March 30, the University of Dubuque’s Wendt Center for Character Education will host Sister Helen Prejean, CSJ, author of Dead Man Walking: An Eyewitness Account of the Death Penalty in the United States, who will deliver the lecture, “Dead Man Walking – The Journey Continues” as part of the Lester G. and Michael Lester Wendt Lecture Series. The lecture will begin at 7:00 p.m. in Heritage Center’s John and Alice Butler Hall on the University of Dubuque Campus. Sr. Helen’s lecture will be followed by a book signing in the A.Y. McDonald Lobby; both of her books will be available for purchase. The event is free and open to the public, but tickets are required for admission and may be obtained through the Farber Box Office.

Upset Thursday Leaves Spartans Hosting Tournament Championship Saturday

The University of Dubuque men's basketball needed some help on Thursday night to return to the warm confines of Jon Davison Court in Stoltz Sports Center for a championship game of the the 2015 IIAC Men's Basketball Tournament. UD upset #2 seed Coe College Kohawks 71-59 to finish their part of upset Thursday. #5-seed Wartburg playing in a hostile Siebens Center against the #1 seed Buena Vista University Beavers completed the upset by dropping the Beavers 93-88 in overtime. The #3-seeded Spartans will now host the #5 seeded Wartburg Knights on Saturday, tentatively scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off.
