2016 Spartan Invite
DUBUQUE, Iowa – Sophomore Alec Bass broke his own school record in winning the mile with a time of 4:17.97 as the University of Dubuque men’s track and field team finished fourth at the UD Spartan Invite.

UD placed fourth with 81 points in the seven-team field that featured IIAC foes in Luther and Loras. The Spartans will face the two again next week at the Iowa Conference Championships. UW-Platteville outdistanced the field with 146 points to take the team title.

Bass broke his own school record for the second straight week after smashing his 5000m record in last Saturday’s meet at Platteville. The sophomore beat out his previous mile record of 4:23.07 by over five seconds. Bass’s mile time of 4:17.97 sits second in the Iowa Conference.

Other winners included freshman Blaze Murfin in the shot put (15.50m/50-10.25) and freshman Kortez Pickett in the high jump (1.95m/6-4.75). Murfin corralled his third shot put win of the season and still leads the IIAC by a wide margin. Pickett took home his first career win and is now ranked sixth overall in the IIAC.

Murfin also finished second in the weight throw (16.97m/55-8.25) with teammate Mario-John Otchere placing third with at toss of 16.95m/55-7.5.

Sophomore Colby Rattenborg placed runner up in the long jump with a leap of 6.49m/21.3-5.

The Spartans head out west to Buena Vista next Friday and Saturday, February 26 and 27, respectively, for the Iowa Conference Indoor Championships.
