Behind Murfin, Men’s Track Places Third at Outdoor Season Opener

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Freshman Blaze Murfin won the hammer throw (51.82m) and placed second in both the discus (46.53m) and shot put (15.38m) in anchoring the University of Dubuque men’s track and field team to third at Coe’s Last Minute Invite.

The Spartans collected 93 points in the eight-team meet that featured five Iowa Conference schools. Loras and Simpson finished first and second and outdistanced the field with 183.50 points and 160.50 points, respectively.

Murfin was the top Division III finisher in his first-ever discus competition, won the hammer throw over teammate Scott Taylor by over seven meters, and placed second in the shot put after landing only one of his six throws of the day at 15.38m.

On a windy day that featured 70 degree plus temperatures, freshman Kortez Pickett collected a pair of runner-up finishes in the high jump (1.90m) and long jump (6.57m).

Other top-5 highlights include Isaiah Ellis in both the 100m (11.23) and the 200m (22.54) and freshman Hunter Klose’s fourth-place showing in the 800m (2:01.63).

The Spartans head to the Luther Norse Relays next Saturday, April 9.
