Busy Week for Spartan Softball

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque softball team will finish up their final week of the season playing 10 games over seven days. The Spartans lost a doubleheader on Senior Day April 23 to Coe College by score of 0-8 and 1-5. Monday the Spartans lost to UW-Whitewater 1-11 and 5-9 in their final at home games of the season.
Wednesday's Iowa Conference games at Wartburg were moved to Tuesday due to rain expected on Wednesday. Unfortuantely for the Spartans the Knights held them scoreless, winning game on eby a 0-6 margin and capturing game two by a 0-4 mark. Thursday the Spartan will travel across the bridge the face the UW-Platteville Pioneers in a doubleheader in Plateville, Wis. before finishing their season all the way across the state of Iowa in Storm Lake, Iowa on Saturday, April 30 at 1:00 p.m.
The Spartans 8-28 overall, 1-11 in IIAC are led offensively by Tori Woltz whose 34 hits in 109 at bats with 12 RBI's for a .312 average and a slugging percentage of .339. Brianna Gyrion and teammate Courtney Markin are nearly identical in batting average. Gyrion has the narrow edge .304 after 28 hits in 92 at bats with 14 RBI's and Markin's .303 with 27 hits in 89 at bats with 11 RBI's. As a team the Spartans are hitting .242 in 2016 with a slugging percentage of .304.
UD's fielding percentage is .944 after committing 61 errors in 698 putouts and 337 assists. The Spartans have attempted 24 stolen bases and been thrown out just six times. UD has stranded 220 batters left on base and turned 15 double plays.
On the mound for the Spartans, UD's pitchers have a team 4.60 ERA in 36 games. Freshman Mackenzie Kyle las the team's low ERA with 3.58 after making 19 appearances. She has tossed 74.1 innings, struck out 40 and walked 40 while allowing 89 hits and 38 earned runs with opponents battig average at .292. Taylor Blair has a 4.39 ERA, fanned 27 batters in 52.2 innings and walked 22 batters after allowing 69 hits and 33 earned runs and holding her opponents to a .308 batting average. Randee Jackson has a ERA 0f 5.0 after 63.0 innings. She has 25 strikeouts and 35 walks after allowing 87 hits and 45 earned runs. Megan Schlueter has a 6.07 ERA in 42.2 innings with 14 strikeouts and 28 walks. She has allowed 65 hits and 37 earned runs after facing 181 batters in 2016.
