UD Fishing Club Finishes Top 10 at Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship
Jul 27, 2015 | Kristi Lynch
Formed in 2011, the University of Dubuque Fishing Club has steadily been “releasing more line” in the world of college fishing. Recently, two members of the club, Austin Brimeyer (Senior beginning in the fall, Dubuque, IA) and Anthony Riesberg (Graduated May 2015, Dyersville, IA), competed in the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship.
The journey began at the end of May when the two competed in the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Midwestern Regional held in La Crosse, WI May 28-30. With a third place finish, they were part of the top 13 teams who qualified for the National Championship from their division. The National Championship took place on Lake DuBay near Stevens Point, WI July 9-11. After day one the two were in 28th place out of 81 teams from across the country that qualified. On day two, they were able to move all the way up to a 7th place finish after falling just short (2 lbs. 2 oz.) of the top 5 teams that would compete on the third and final day. While they did not bring home the title, it was the first time the up and coming club advanced to a National Championship.
Team member Anthony Riesberg says, “Competing in the National Championship with the top ten percent of college anglers in the country was an unbelievable experience. I think we really proved ourselves and showed that our club has the ability to compete with the best of the best in college fishing. Lake DuBay was a tough fishery and tested us in many ways, but ultimately we kept our focus, and a seventh place finish is something to be extremely proud of!”
