Second Half Run by Redmen Sinks Women’s Lacrosse

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque women’s lacrosse team kept it close until three unanswered goals late in the second half doomed the Spartans in a 10-6 defeat to Carthage on Saturday afternoon.

Both Bridget Schirmers and Haley Shilts scored two goals with Shilts adding three ground balls and three draw controls.

Shilts’ free position goal cut the Carthage lead to 6-5 with a little over 15 minutes to go in the game. The Spartans (10-5, 1-3 CCIW) were held scoreless until Kelly Wetherald’s only score of the game with just 33 seconds left as the Redmen utilized three straight goals over that span to beat the Spartans for the fourth time.

UD played a competitive match, but hurt themselves with 15 turnovers in the second half compared to seven for the Redmen. The Spartans kept it close after falling by the combined score of 59-9 to Carthage (10-4, 4-1 CCIW) in their previous three meetings.

The Spartans surrendered the shot count, 34-23, and cleared the ball 12 of 23 times.

UD goalkeeper Kaley Weir (9-5) collected a season-high 16 saves in defeat.

UD heads to North Central this Wednesday, April 27 at 7:00 p.m. as they look to keep their CCIW conference tournament hopes alive.
